Breakdown

HB Counter out of Shotgun Y Off Trips is a Power Run scheme that pulls a blocker across the formation to lead the HB through the point of attack, misdirecting the frontside flow before the ball carrier cuts back against the grain. From the trips look, the offensive line down blocks while the puller kicks out the edge defender, creating a natural rebound lane for the HB. This is a run play designed to attack overaggressive linebacker flow and gap-shooting fronts, and the primary read progression is patience: let the counter action develop, press the hole, and read the pulling blocker's kick out before deciding to bounce or cut inside.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebackers flowing hard to the play side flow immediately after the snap, since that overpursuit is exactly what counter exploits for the cutback. Identify the edge defender assigned to set the block point. If he stays disciplined and does not get kicked out, the play has nowhere to go and should be abandoned for a cutback the next snap. Key the safety depth before the snap. A single high safety cheating toward the trips side signals man coverage rotation and a lighter box, which favors the counter's blocking numbers. Post-snap, track any user-controlled defender flashing down into the box on a delayed blitz timing, since a well timed A gap shoot can blow up the counter before the puller arrives. Look for defensive tackles crashing hard down the line on run keys, since a disciplined interior front that holds gaps forces the HB to bounce outside where trips receivers must sustain their blocks.

Usage Tips

Run this out of trips formations against defenses showing light boxes or split safety looks, since the trips receivers can pull an extra defender out wide and thin out the run fit.

Check the Mike linebacker depth pre-snap. If he is stacked tight to the line expecting a quick hitter, counter's misdirection timing will freeze him and open the cutback lane.

Pair HB Counter with Inside Zone and Duo from this same set to keep the defense guessing between gap and zone run schemes, then dial up RPO Counter Alert Shock or RPO Counter Peek later in the series once the defense starts cheating linebackers toward the counter flow.

Avoid calling this against fast flow 3-4 fronts with disciplined edge defenders who stay home, since a squeezed kick out block kills the cutback lane instantly.

Use manual control on the HB to press the hole hard before breaking, since patience against overpursuing defenders is what makes counter effective in competitive play.
