Same Side Zone out of Shotgun Y Off Trips is an inside zone run play where the entire offensive line and the trips receivers work to the same side, sealing the play side edge while the backside is left unblocked for cutback lanes. This is a pure run concept designed to attack the play side gaps first, with the running back reading the play side double team and B gap before bouncing to the backside if the defense overloads the front. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is play side A gap to B gap to backside cutback, following the blocking flow of the linemen rather than a route combo.
Look for the play side linebacker and safety alignment before the snap, since a stacked box with the safety inside the numbers signals a run blitz that can blow up the zone scheme. Watch for defensive tackles shading toward the play side A gap, which telegraphs a slanting front designed to beat zone blocking and forces you to think cutback immediately. Identify if the defense is in a two high shell with soft box counts, since that alignment gives the play side double team room to work and opens up B gap running lanes. Key on user controlled defenders flowing hard to the play side, because an overcommitted user linebacker or safety leaves the backside cutback wide open for a big gain. This run struggles against odd front nose tackles anchored in the play side A gap and against defenses that send a linebacker on a delayed run blitz through the play side gap before the double team can climb.
Use this play against defenses showing light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the run fit, since the trips side blockers create a numbers advantage play side. Check the play side linebacker depth pre-snap: if he is stacked tight to the line expecting run, consider audibling to RPO Bubble Y Pop or RPO Glance Post from the same formation to punish an aggressive front. Hot route the trips receivers into stalk blocks if you see safeties creeping down into the box, which locks up support defenders longer and widens the cutback lane. This play works best on early downs like first and ten or second and short when defenses have not committed extra defenders to stop the pass. Pair Same Side Zone with HB Slip Screen or HB Swing Screen later in a series so defenses that key hard on the zone blocking flow get burned by the perimeter screen action out of the same personnel and formation look.
