Whip Smash out of Shotgun Y Off Trips is a classic Smash concept built off the trips side, pairing a hitch or whip route underneath with a corner route stretching the defense vertically, while the backside typically runs a complementary out or dig to hold the single side defender. This is a man beater at its core, using the whip motion at the top of the route stem to create leverage against man coverage and create natural separation against press or trail technique. Your primary read starts with the corner route to the flat defender: if the underneath whip route sits down and occupies the flat defender, work the corner route behind him for the explosive gain, then check down to the whip route if the corner is capped.
Look for cornerbacks playing tight press or inside shade pre-snap, since this signals man coverage that the whip route is designed to defeat. Check the flat defender's depth at the snap: if he sinks with the corner route, the whip route sitting underneath should be wide open for an easy completion. Watch for a single high safety rotating late, which tells you the corner route has a one-on-one matchup down the sideline with no help. Beware of a Cover 2 shell with two deep safeties splitting the field, since the corner route runs directly into the deep half defender and gets taken away. User linebackers sitting in shallow zone can jump the whip route if the quarterback holds the ball too long, so timing the throw before the underneath defender reacts is critical against zone-heavy defenses.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two high safeties or a single high shell, since Whip Smash thrives against man coverage with a single deep safety who cannot help over the top on both trips receivers. Motion the backside receiver or use a hot route to check the flat defender's reaction if you suspect zone coverage disguised as man. Use this play on second and medium to second and long situations where the corner route has room to work and the defense is more likely to play off coverage. Combine this with Stick or Curls from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and the deeper smash concept, since both plays start with similar formation alignment. If the cornerback is playing hard outside leverage, hot route the whip route to a quicker option route to give your quarterback a faster underneath answer against aggressive press man.
