RPO Counter Glance Post runs out of Shotgun Y Off Trips with an isolated backside receiver running a glance post while the offensive line and backfield execute a counter run action away from the trips side. The diagram shows the single X receiver breaking vertically upfield into a post angle off the glance stem, giving the quarterback a run/pass key based on how the read defender reacts to the counter action. This is an RPO built to attack light boxes and aggressive linebacker flow, with the primary read being give the counter on a clean box read or pull and throw the glance post if the alley or second level defender crashes down on the run action.
Defensive Reads
Pre snap identify single high versus two high shells, single high safeties are more likely to bite on run action which opens the glance post over the top. Watch cornerback depth on the isolated X receiver, soft or off man coverage is a green light for the post since the defender lacks the cushion to recover on the vertical break. Post snap key the flow of the second level defenders, if linebackers step up hard into the counter gap the QB read triggers the throw so user defenders need to stay disciplined and not overpursue the run fake. This play is countered by teams that spy the RPO read key with a linebacker who stays home in the throwing lane, taking away the glance post window entirely. Aggressive man blitzes with no safety help over the top are the biggest vulnerability, since the glance post will beat man coverage on the vertical stem if the corner has no deep help.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap, if there are six or fewer defenders in the box this is a green light to trust the counter hand off. Watch the flow of the read defender, usually a linebacker or slot corner, if he crashes hard toward the counter action pull it and throw the glance post immediately since the window closes fast. Use this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep defenses honest and set up explosive shots later in the drive. Pair this call with RPO Glance Post and RPO Counter Peek in the same set so the defense cannot key on run action versus pass action from formation alone. Against teams that load the box on early downs, lean on the post throw exclusively and use this as a low risk deep shot rather than forcing the counter into a stacked front.
