Y Lead Read Opt is a read option run play out of Shotgun Y Off Trips with 11 personnel, showing the QB and HB in the backfield with the offensive line blocking down at the point of attack while the QB reads the edge defender to decide whether to hand off or keep. The trips receivers stay flat with no route depth shown in the diagram, keeping the defense honest on the perimeter without pulling numbers into the box. The primary read progression is the mesh point: the QB keys the unblocked EDGE defender first to determine give versus keep, then works to the alley defender if he pulls the ball outside.
Watch the play side EDGE defender pre-snap alignment since a wide 9 technique tips the QB toward a keep read while a tight 5 technique favors the give. Key linebacker depth at the snap, if the Mike and Will linebackers crash downhill immediately the give is dead and the QB should pull and bounce outside. Identify user-controlled defenders spying the QB, a defender sitting in the backfield mesh area signals the human is jumping the option keep. Look for safety rotation into the box pre-snap, an eighth man in the box against this light trips run look usually means a run blitz or contain plan. If corners press the trips receivers with no deep safety help, that is a green light look since the defense committed extra bodies to stop the run.
Check the box count pre-snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders since the trips set does not create extra gap blockers.
Use the QB read mechanic manually if your league allows it so you control the keep decision instead of relying on the CPU logic.
Pair this with Inside Zone and HB Counter from the same Y Off Trips set so defenses cannot sit on one run scheme, forcing linebackers to respect both gap and zone runs.
Call this on early downs (first and ten or second and short) when defenses are more likely to play base fronts instead of stacking the box.
If the defense shows a crashing DE every snap, hot route into RPO Read Y Flat or RPO Read WR Screen from the same set to punish that aggression with a quick perimeter throw.
