Read Option out of Shotgun Y Off Trips lines up with trips to one side and a lone receiver backside, giving the QB an isolated numbers matchup to work off the mesh point. The diagram shows the classic zone read mesh: the offensive line blocks down for inside zone while the QB reads the backside end or OLB, either handing off on the give path or pulling to keep and attack the edge. This is a run play designed to punish overpursuing defensive ends and light boxes, and the primary read progression is the backside defender first (give or keep), then the QB's own lane once he pulls it.
Key the backside defensive end or OLB before the snap since he is the actual read defender for the QB's give or keep decision. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they scrape hard to the playside A gap it usually leaves a keep lane open for the QB on the backside edge. Identify one high safety shells versus two high shells, one high alignments often mean an extra man in the box which slows the give read but makes the QB run more live. Look for a scraping Mike linebacker or a fast-flowing Sam to jump the mesh point, that user aggression is exactly what turns this into a big keep run if the QB reads it correctly. Watch for edge defenders that stay disciplined and squeeze the mesh, that is the coverage shell that shuts this play down and forces you to check into a different concept.
Check the box count before the snap and only call this against six or fewer defenders in the box to keep the numbers advantage. Use the trips side alignment to bait the defense into rotating a safety down, which opens up the backside keep lane for the QB. If the defense shows a hard crash from the read defender on early reps, hot route the backside receiver into a quick screen or bubble look using RPO Read WR Screen to keep them honest. Pair this with Inside Zone and HB Draw earlier in a drive so the read look blends in and defenders freeze instead of flowing hard to the mesh point. Best called on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and medium) when you want balance and want to keep the defense guessing between run and RPO looks from the same formation.
