Breakdown

Inside Zone Split lines up out of Shotgun Y Off Trips with 11 personnel, showing a trips receiver bunch to one side and two isolated split ends wide to the boundary and backside. The blocking scheme is a standard inside zone track with the line covering down and flowing laterally to seal frontside gaps while the RB reads the double team at the point of attack. This is a pure run play with no route concepts attached, so the primary read is the frontside double team into the backside cutback lane, letting the ball carrier press the hole and bend it based on the first level flow of the linebackers.

Defensive Reads

Identify base fronts and light boxes pre-snap since this play struggles against stacked eight man boxes and run blitzes from the second level. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they crash hard toward the play side flow the RB should stick the cutback for a big gain. Beware of user controlled defenders spying the backside gap, aggressive players will sit and wait for the cutback lane on inside zone concepts. This scheme beats single high looks like Cover 1 and Cover 3 where linebackers are forced to respect run fits without extra deep help crashing down. Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with safeties sitting at depth can still be attacked if the front six do not fill gaps fast enough, so key the defensive tackle alignment for the frontside double team.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle box.

Use the trips bunch alignment to bait the defense into rotating a safety or nickel down, then trust the cutback lane if the backside linebacker overpursues.

Pair this with RPO Bubble Y Pop or RPO Duo Alert Glance out of the same Y Off Trips set so the defense has to respect both the run action and the quick game off identical formation looks.

Best called on early downs, first and ten or second and short, to stay ahead of the chains and keep defenses honest against your play-action shots like PA Zone Shot from the same personnel.

Motion is not shown in this look, so rely on formation recognition alone and snap quickly against defenses that are still settling their front.
