Return RPO Alert Flat is an RPO out of Shotgun Y Off Trips that uses pre-snap motion to shift the trips receiver into a return path before the snap. The read is a flat/flare route combined with an arrow route from the backfield, giving the quarterback a run/pass alert against the numbers in the box: if the defense stays light, hand it off, if defenders flow to the run fit, the QB pulls and hits the flat or arrow route working laterally underneath. The line shows zone run blocking up front while two receivers work quick underneath routes to the flat and a linebacker or slot defender's alignment, making this a light box beater rather than a true man or deep zone beater. Primary progression is run read first, then flat route, then the arrow route as the checkdown.
Watch the linebacker depth before the snap: shallow linebackers who crash down on run fits are the trigger to throw the flat route immediately. Identify if the defense rotates a safety down into the box during the motion, which signals they are selling out to stop the run and opening up the flat and arrow routes. Look for user-controlled defenders sitting in the shallow flat zone (lurk technique), since this is the exact area this play attacks and a spy there can jump the throw. Man coverage on the motion receiver invites a blitz off the edge, so recognize press alignment on the outside receivers as a cue to get the ball out fast. Cover 2 or Cover 3 shells with active flat defenders can shut this down if the corner sinks under the flat route, so be ready to check the run instead when you see that leverage.
Check the box count before the snap and use the motion to identify if the defense shifts a defender over the top, which tells you whether to lean run or pass.
If the linebacker crashes down on the motion man's return path, pull the ball immediately and throw the flat route before the flow defender can undercut it.
Use hot routes to convert the arrow route into a wheel or seam if you diagnose man coverage after the motion, since the flat concept alone struggles against tight man leverage.
Pair this play with Inside Zone or HB Dive on early downs to condition the defense to bite on run action, then call Return RPO Alert Flat on 2nd or 3rd and short to punish overaggressive linebackers.
Combine with RPO Bubble Y Pop or RPO Read WR Screen in the same set so the defense cannot key on motion alone to diagnose run versus pass.
