Breakdown

PA Mtn Slide is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Y Off Trips that uses a run fake to hold the linebackers before working a vertical stretch down the field. Off the play fake, the backside receiver runs a corner breaking route into the boundary, the inline receiver from the bunch releases on a vertical seam up the middle of the field, and the trips side receiver runs a deep out breaking away from the formation. The blocking on the fake occupies the box defenders and the primary read progression starts with the seam route up the middle, then works to the corner route on the backside before finally checking the deep out on the trips side.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth immediately after the snap, if they step up hard on the run fake the seam route will be wide open for a big gain. Identify single high safety looks pre-snap since this play is designed to attack the seam and corner routes against man coverage and single high shells. Beware of user controlled defenders sitting in a deep middle lurk technique, they can jump the seam route if the quarterback holds the ball too long. Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties can squeeze both the corner route and the seam route, forcing the quarterback down to the deep out on the trips side as the checkdown. Watch for delayed blitzes disguised as coverage drops, since the play action hold can leave the quarterback exposed if the offensive line does not pick up extra rushers.

Usage Tips

Sell the play fake by holding the analog stick or letting the animation play out fully so linebackers bite on the run action and open passing lanes underneath the seam route.

Use this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage where defenses are more likely to load the box or trigger run blitzes off the pre-snap look.

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties rotate your first read to the deep out since the corner route into the boundary will be crowded.

Hot route the seam runner into a deeper post if you diagnose single high man coverage, since the seam sits behind linebackers but ahead of the deep safety in most zone shells.

Pair this call with Mtn Stick or PA Read Smash earlier in a drive so the defense respects the run fake and the underneath stick concepts, setting up this deeper shot play later in the series.
