Breakdown

Bounce PA Deep Out is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Y Off Trips with pre-snap motion into the backfield to sell the outside zone run bounce look before the QB pulls and rolls off the fake. On the diagram, the two trips receivers stack a deep out breaking hard to the sideline off a vertical stem while the isolated backside receiver runs a sit and go style route that angles inside then releases vertically up the numbers, with the RB checking protection on a flat route underneath. This is a man beater designed to punish aggressive corners and linebackers who bite on the play-action fake, with the deep out as the clear first read and the backside vertical as the home run alert if the safety cheats down.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebackers stepping up hard on the play-action fake, since that opens the deep out and flat throwing lanes underneath. Key the flat foot corner technique on the trips side, if he opens his hips to the sideline early he is playing off zone and the out route sits down in the window. Identify single high safety shells before the snap because that tells you the backside vertical has a one on one shot against the corner with no help over the top. Track user controlled defenders dropping into the deep out landmark, a lurking linebacker or safety sitting on that route can jump the throw if the QB stares it down too long. Man coverage with press corners and no safety rotation is the ideal shell to attack, while two deep zone shells with disciplined linebackers who ignore the run fake are the toughest coverage to beat with this concept.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion to bait linebackers into run fits and check if the defense shifts a defender to match the motion man, which signals man coverage. Look for corners playing off or bailing at the snap since that tells you the deep out will be there on time against zone drops. If you see two high safeties holding depth, hot route the backside vertical into a quicker comeback to avoid throwing into a deep zone drop. This play pairs well with Inside Zone or HB Direct Snap earlier in a series to get defenders flowing hard on run fits before hitting the deep out or backside shot. Best used on second and medium to long or first down in obvious run down counts where linebackers are keyed to attack the line of scrimmage.
