HB Direct Snap is a trick play out of Shotgun Y Off Trips 11 personnel where the snap goes directly to the halfback aligned in the backfield, bypassing the QB entirely. The diagram shows the HB taking the direct snap and cutting upfield behind the interior offensive line with a gap scheme up front, no route concept is shown since this is a designed run gadget. There is no true progression read here since the QB is not involved, the ball carrier simply reads the point of attack blocking up front and picks his gap.
Pre-snap, key the box count and safety depth, if the defense stacks eight in the box this play has no natural cutback lane and gets stuffed. Watch for user-controlled defenders crashing down immediately at the snap, since human defenders who recognize the direct snap tendency can blow this up before the HB gets to the line. Defenses in man coverage with blitz packages are vulnerable here because their linebackers are often reading the QB's mesh point instead of the direct snap action, creating a half second delay. Disciplined zone defenses that stay square and read backfield flow rather than biting on motion or play fakes are the best counter, since they will not overcommit to a fake mesh point. Post-snap, if the interior defensive line stunts or the middle linebacker fills the gap quickly, expect this play to be capped for minimal gain or a loss.
Call this on early downs or short yardage when the defense has shown aggressive run blitz tendencies from standard formations, since the direct snap catches linebackers keying the QB's hands out of position.
Use this sparingly, once or twice a game, so defenders do not sit on it after recognizing the Y Off Trips personnel and alignment tendency.
Pair it in a sequence with HB Dive, HB Counter, or Inside Zone from the same set so opponents cannot key on formation tendencies and start guessing the direct snap based on backfield alignment alone.
If the defense shows a heavy box pre-snap with safeties crashing down, avoid this call and pivot to RPO Bubble Y Pop or RPO Read WR Screen from the same set to attack the light perimeter instead.
Since there is no passing option, commit to the run design and trust your gap read rather than trying to bounce it outside against disciplined edge defenders.
