Bunch Wide takes the standard Shotgun 11 personnel look and compresses three receivers into a tight cluster to one side, with the single receiver isolated on the far numbers and the back offset next to the quarterback. Unlike Shotgun spread sets that stretch defenders across the width of the field, Bunch Wide creates a leverage problem in a phone booth: three route runners occupy roughly five yards of horizontal space, which forces man coverage defenders into traffic and makes zone defenders declare their pattern match rules immediately after the snap. The bunch alignment sits wide of the numbers rather than tight to the formation, so the flat and corner routes have real grass to work with instead of dying on the sideline.
The 11 personnel grouping is what makes this set dangerous. Your tight end usually aligns as the point man or inside the bunch, meaning a linebacker or safety has to fight through two receivers to get a clean press, and your best slot threat gets a free release on almost every snap. The isolated X receiver on the backside is the real prize: with the defense rotating strength to the bunch, you routinely get single high or pure man coverage on the iso side with no help defender within fifteen yards. That is your matchup dictator, and every read in this set should start with a pre-snap coverage check on that side.
Concept variety is deep here. Spacing, Post Spacing, and Slant Spacing Dig hammer Cover 3 and Cover 4 with horizontal stretch plus a dig behind the linebacker drop. Z Spot, Curl Flat, and Slot Hook attack quarters and Cover 2 with high low reads off the bunch. Drive Y Corner, Levels Dig, Speed Dig, and Y Trail are your mesh and rub concepts against man. The Mtn tagged plays plus Cheat Flood, Cheat Slot Cross, and Jet Pull Shallow give you motion based tells and full field flood reads, while Inside Zone, Mtn Inside Zone Split, and PA Post keep the run and play action shell honest. Cross Screen and Cheat HB Slip Screen punish over aggressive edge pressure.
Check the defender count over the bunch before the snap. Two defenders on three receivers means you throw bunch side, three or more means you flip to the isolated X with a slant or fade hot route.
Motion the point man across with Cheat Flood or Cheat Slot Cross to diagnose coverage. If a defender travels it is man, so go to your rub concepts. If nobody follows, work Spacing and Post Spacing against the zone shell.
On third down between five and nine yards, Levels Dig, Speed Dig, and Speed Dig Out give you a dig behind the linebacker level with a checkdown underneath. Hot route the back to a flat or angle route as your pressure answer.
Use PA Post and Mtn PA Crossers after establishing Inside Zone from this set. The play action hold pulls the second level defenders up and opens the deep post over a single high safety.
Against edge heat and overload blitzes, go to Cross Screen or Cheat HB Slip Screen. The bunch already has blockers in position and you will get chunk yards while the defense is vacating that side.
