Overview

Henry Special is a 165 play specialty offensive playbook that splits its identity down the middle: a Shotgun passing core that makes up 64 percent of the calls (105 plays across 11 sets) sitting on top of a heavy run package built out of Near, Singleback, Goal Line Offense, I Form and Strong I. That is an unusual build. Most specialty books commit fully to one gimmick. This one gives you a full Shotgun spread menu with 11 distinct sets to rotate through, then hands you 24 plays of Near work and a 9 play Goal Line Offense package for the snaps where you want to physically finish a drive.

The Near concentration is what separates this book from anything else you can load. Near appears in only 9 of the game's 236 playbooks, which means the majority of your opponents have never lined up against it and have no pre-snap read on the backfield alignment or the blocking angles. With 3 Near sets and 0 1 Trap in the run tree, you get downhill interior runs from a look most users cannot diagnose in the play art window. Pair that with FB Dive out of both I Form and Strong I and you have a legitimate 21 and 23 personnel identity that forces defenses to keep base personnel on the field.

Concept coverage leans into that split: Power, Power Run, Counter, Toss and Dive on the ground, with Play Action, Flat, Spot, Motion and a designated Cover 3 Beater set in the pass tree. Double Slant out of Shotgun gives you the quick man beater, the Play Action tags let you punish defenses that overcommit to Near and FB Dive, and Cheat HB Dive Wk out of Goal Line Offense is your short yardage closer. Choosing Henry Special over a standard offensive book means you accept a smaller total play count in exchange for a rare formation edge and a cleaner run to pass marriage from the same personnel groups.

Scheme Fit

Henry Special wants a bruising back who can carry Dive, Power, Counter and Toss volume, a real fullback with high lead block and impact blocking for the FB Dive and Goal Line Offense calls, and at least two tight ends who can hold up in 23 and 12 personnel. The quarterback does not need elite mobility, but he does need quick release and accuracy on the short and intermediate throws that Double Slant, Spot and Flat concepts live on, plus enough athleticism to sell the Play Action rollouts off the Near looks. Pick this book if you enjoy winning with formation unfamiliarity and clock control rather than scheme volume, and if you are comfortable operating out of 11 Shotgun sets without a five wide bailout.

Strengths

  • Near is a genuine information advantage. It only shows up in 9 of 236 playbooks, so opponents rarely have reps against the 3 Near sets, and the 24 plays there include 0 1 Trap style interior runs that are hard to fit up on the fly.
  • The 11 Shotgun sets across 105 plays give you more audible depth than almost any specialty book. You can build a single Shotgun audible package that carries Double Slant as your man beater, the Cover 3 Beater concept for zone, and Play Action off the Near and FB Dive tendencies.
  • Heavy run identity is real, not decorative. Near, Singleback, I Form, Strong I and Goal Line Offense combine for 57 plays with 21, 23 and 12 personnel, so you can run FB Dive, Power, Counter and Toss from multiple alignments and force base defensive personnel to stay out.
  • Goal Line Offense with 9 plays including Cheat HB Dive Wk gives you a dedicated closing package. You do not have to hunt through a spread set for a one yard conversion, and formation subs let you get your best blocking tight ends and fullback on the field for it.
  • Motion and Play Action concepts overlap the run tree cleanly. Because the same 21 and 23 personnel show up in Near, I Form and Strong I, your play action rollouts and Flat concepts sell off looks the defense has already seen you run.

Weaknesses

  • 165 plays is small. It is larger than none of the game's other specialty playbooks, so you are working with the thinnest total menu available and a good opponent will map your route combos quickly.
  • There is no listed 10 personnel or 4 WR empty answer. Personnel tops out at 11 (1 RB, 1 TE, 3 WR), which means no true five wide spacing to beat a heavy man blitz, and Hail Mary's 3 plays across 2 sets are situational only.
  • The 64 percent Shotgun weighting makes your under center passing thin. With Singleback at only 12 plays in 1 set and I Form and Strong I at 6 plays each, your play action menu from under center is narrow and predictable once the defense commits to the run fit.
  • Zone coverage depth can squeeze you. The pass tree is built around Flat, Spot, Double Slant and a single Cover 3 Beater tag, so match coverage and Cover 2 invert looks force you to hold the ball longer than a book with a deeper vertical package.
  • Near and Goal Line Offense both telegraph run. When you line up in a 23 (2 RB, 3 TE, 0 WR) look, users will drop a safety into the box, and without a wide receiver on the field your only counter is the Play Action tags.

Usage Tips

Build your primary audible package inside the Shotgun sets. With 11 sets and 105 plays to pick from, load one quick man beater like Double Slant, one Cover 3 Beater, and one Play Action shot so you can answer any pre snap shell on second and medium.

Use Near on first and second down between the 20s. Three sets and 24 plays give you 0 1 Trap and Power looks from an alignment your opponent likely has zero reps against, and the unfamiliar backfield read buys you a half second on the defensive fit.

Save Goal Line Offense strictly for inside the three and fourth and one. Cheat HB Dive Wk is the call, and you should formation sub your heaviest blockers in before the drive reaches the red zone so you are not burning a timeout.

Alternate FB Dive between I Form and Strong I rather than repeating it from one look. Both carry 6 plays, so the same downhill concept from two alignments keeps the linebackers honest without showing your whole under center tree.

Pull Singleback's 12 plays for second and long play action. It is your only 1 RB under center set, so the run threat off 12 personnel reads differently than everything else you have shown from Shotgun.
