Double Slant is a quick-hitting pass concept out of the I Form Slot set with 21 personnel. Both outside receivers (X and slot Y) run slants underneath while the TE from the line runs a corner route to occupy the deep defenders, and the HB releases out of the backfield on a delayed flare that curls upfield toward the sideline. This is a man beater designed to attack underneath leverage: the primary read is the near slant, working to the second slant, with the HB flare as the checkdown against blitz.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage with inside technique corners gets exposed here since both slants attack the inside void immediately at the snap. Watch for a linebacker sitting in a shallow zone drop between the two slants, that defender can undercut both routes if he reads quarterback eyes. Cover 3 with a hard sink from the middle linebacker can take away the second slant, forcing the quarterback to rush the first read. If the defense shows Cover 2 with corners playing off, the slants have a tight throwing window before the flat defender closes, so timing the throw before the break is critical. Blitz-heavy fronts can be countered by getting the ball out fast on the first slant since both routes break quickly and do not require a deep-developing pocket.

Usage Tips

Use this on third and short to medium when the defense is likely to play man coverage with tight underneath leverage.

Pre-snap, check if the corners are playing outside shade, if so the slants will have an easy angle to work inside.

Hot route the TE corner route into a shallow drag if you see a heavy zone shell to give yourself an extra underneath option against the flood of zone defenders.

Pair this with PA X Dagger or Dagger from the same set to keep the defense honest on deeper shots after they start jumping the quick slants.

Snap the ball quickly on the first read slant to beat blitz packages before extra rushers get home, since the HB flare release is delayed and not an immediate outlet.
