Breakdown
Double Slant out of the I Form Slot set aligns two receivers to the left running slants at different depths (an outside slant and a shorter inside slant from the slot), while the TE on the line releases up the seam and the flanker to the right runs an out and up before an HB releases from the backfield on a leaking route underneath toward the flat. The design stacks two quick inside breaking routes on one side to overload a defender in man coverage while giving zone defenses conflicting horizontal stretches at three levels. Primary read starts with the double slants on the left, working from the outside slant to the inside slant, then working right to the flanker's out and up and finally checking down to the HB's underneath route if the initial reads are covered.
Defensive Reads
Watch the slot defender at the snap, if he sinks into a shallow zone drop instead of mirroring the slant route it signals zone coverage and you should user him to jump the shorter inside slant. Key the flat defender on the slant side, aggressive flat drops or blitzing linebackers open a natural throwing lane for the outside slant since nobody is left to wall it off. Against man coverage, watch for a linebacker or safety showing blitz off the edge, since the HB leak route is designed to counter that pressure with a quick checkdown. Cover 3 with a hard squat corner can jump the outside slant, so be ready to progress inside to the shorter slant or use the TE's seam route against the vacated middle. Cover 2 shells with safeties sitting deep leave the underdig lanes for both slants open, but a disciplined Mike linebacker sitting in the throwing lane can bait a costly interception if you rush the first read.
Usage Tips
Presnap identify if the defense is showing man or zone by checking corner alignment on the slant side, tight press corners usually mean man and slants will separate quickly off the line. If you see a single high safety with corners squatting outside, hot route the outside slant into a quick option or speed out to avoid the flat defender sitting on it. This play works best on 2nd or 3rd and short to medium since the slants develop fast and beat blitzes before pressure arrives. Pair this with PA X Dagger or Dagger from the same set to sell a similar initial read while attacking deeper zones once defenses start jumping the quick slants. Use the HB leak route as your blitz beater answer, since it clears late and gives a checkdown against overloaded pressure looks.
