Post Wheel out of I Form Slot 21 personnel shows a two-receiver concept to the top of the formation paired with an HB wheel out of the backfield. The X (or slot) receiver runs a deep post to occupy the middle of the field while the outside receiver breaks off an in-route crossing underneath, and the halfback releases from the backfield on a wheel route up the sideline for a natural man beater against linebackers or safeties who try to stay attached. This is a play-action-style shot concept built to attack man coverage: the primary read is the post against single-high safety looks, with the wheel route as the number two progression read if a linebacker or nickel tries to carry the HB out of the backfield.

Defensive Reads

Play Cover 3 or Cover 4 with the deep third or deep quarter defender sinking early to take away the post throw before it develops. Assign a linebacker or nickel corner to match the halfback man to man out of the backfield to eliminate the wheel route as a checkdown option. Watch for a user-controlled safety sitting in a deep lurk over the middle, since that defender can jump the post route if the quarterback holds it too long. Key the underneath linebackers, if they bite hard on the in-route or crash toward the flat they leave the wheel route wide open down the sideline. Disguise coverage with a Cover 2 look pre-snap then rotate to man under to bait the quarterback into forcing the post throw into a trap defender.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see one high safety in the middle of the field this play is designed to hit the post over the top for an explosive gain.

If the defense shows two-high safeties, look to the wheel route out of the backfield since it isolates a linebacker in space against your halfback.

Use the shallow in-route as a hot route conversion to a quick out or flat if you need a safety valve against pressure looks or a Cover 0 blitz.

Sequence this play with Bubble Screen or PA Sprint HB Flat earlier in a series to get linebackers flowing downhill, which opens up the wheel route on this call later in the drive.

Best called on second or third and medium to long situations where you need an explosive shot play, since the deep post and wheel both take time to develop.

Motion the halfback pre-snap if available to get a pre-snap read on man versus zone before committing to your first read.
