Breakdown

HB Blast is a downhill power run play out of the I Form Slot 21 personnel package that sends the fullback in to lead block for the halfback through the interior gap, using the FB as an iso blocker on the play side linebacker. The diagram shows the HB taking a direct handoff and hitting the hole almost immediately behind the FB lead, with the offensive line working straight ahead knocks at the point of attack rather than pulling or reaching outside. This is a downhill power run, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read is the FB lead block: follow the fullback into the hole and cut off his block based on how the play side linebacker fills.

Defensive Reads

Key the play side linebacker depth before the snap since a linebacker sitting too far off the line gives the FB a clean angle to seal him. Watch for a stacked box with eight or more defenders, which signals the defense is selling out to stop the interior run and may force you to check to a perimeter play. Post-snap, track whether the play side defensive tackle two gaps or shoots a gap, since a penetrating tackle can blow up the blast before the FB gets a clean shot. Look for user-controlled linebackers flowing downhill immediately after the snap, which usually means the defense is playing aggressive run support and the cutback lane behind the FB block may open up. This play struggles against heavy blitz packages that send extra defenders through the A and B gaps, so if you see a nano blitz look pre-snap, be ready to check to a quick pass or audible out.

Usage Tips

Use HB Blast on early downs in short yardage or goal line situations where you need a quick, physical push between the tackles.

Pre-snap, check the box count and make sure you have enough blockers if the defense stacks the run fits with an extra linebacker or safety near the line.

Hot route the FB only if you need to adjust the lead blocker angle against a shaded nose or 3-technique, otherwise leave the blocking scheme alone to preserve the iso design.

Pair HB Blast with HB Dive Alert Bubble and HB Lead Dive to keep defenses honest on interior run fits before hitting them with HB Stretch or HB Toss to the perimeter.

Run this out of a tight formation on early downs to set up play action shots like PA Power O or PA X Dagger later in the drive once linebackers start creeping up.
