HB Counter out of the I Form Slot set is a gap scheme power run that pulls the backside guard and fullback to lead through the playside hole, using misdirection to get the linebackers flowing the wrong way before the hole opens. The diagram shows the two outside receivers running vertical clear-out routes to pull corners and safeties away from the box, while the offensive line executes down blocks with the FB and pulling guard kicking out the edge defender for the HB to cut off. This is a run play designed to punish aggressive downhill linebackers and overpursuit, with the primary read being the FB and pulling lineman's kick out block to decide whether to bounce outside or cut back inside.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebacker flow before the snap, if they are shaded hard to the play call from a previous tendency, counter action will freeze them and create a clean lane. Identify one high safety shells versus two high shells, single high man coverage often leaves an extra run defender in the box which can clog the cutback lane so be ready to bounce outside. Key the edge defender's reaction to the fullback's kick out block, if he squeezes down hard the HB should cut back inside, if he holds contain the HB should bounce it outside the block. Look for a user controlled linebacker sitting in the backside A or B gap, since counter's backside cutback lane is vulnerable to a spy or lurk defender reading the pulling guard. Beware of cover 0 blitzes or heavy run blitz packages that crash extra defenders into the box pre-snap, since the misdirection alone will not be enough if there are more defenders than blockers at the point of attack.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short when defenses are more likely to sit in base personnel and bite on the counter step. Check the linebacker depth pre-snap: if they are stacked tight to the line and reading run keys aggressively, this play will hit hard because counter action forces false steps. Use the outside vertical routes as a pre-snap cue, if the defense rolls a safety down into the box to help against the run, hot route one of the wideouts into a quick out or slant to punish the extra defender in the box. Pair this play with HB Stretch and HB Toss in the same set to keep linebackers honest, since all three start with similar backfield action but attack different gaps. Sequence this behind PA Ctr Waggle or PA Power O later in a drive so the defense has to respect the counter step and bites on the play action fake off the same look.
