PA Fk Jet Fk Shovel is a play-action shovel concept out of the I Form Slot set that sells jet motion across the formation before faking a shovel pass to the HB in the backfield. Off the fake, the outside WR runs a deep corner route up the numbers while the backside WR on the shovel side releases vertically up the seam, and the TE or slot runs a deep in route across the middle that sits behind the second level. The primary read starts with the deep in/dig crossing route since it attacks the void behind linebackers who bite on the run fake, then works to the corner route if the safety jumps the middle read.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety toward the jet motion, since aggressive motion defenders often signal man coverage responsibilities. Watch the play side linebacker depth at the snap, if he steps up hard to fill the shovel run lane, the deep in route behind him will be wide open for the quarterback. Key the deep safety on the corner route side, a single high safety who bites on the run fake leaves the corner route in a one on one shot down the sideline. User controlled lurk defenders sitting in the middle of the field can jump the deep in route, so if you see a defender hanging in a shallow zone drop instead of reacting to the fake, expect him to sink and rob that crossing route. This play struggles against disciplined zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with linebackers who stay square and do not bite on the shovel fake, since that keeps the underneath and intermediate windows closed.
Usage Tips
Run this out of a run-heavy sequence after you have shown HB Toss, HB Power O, or HB Stretch from this same I Form Slot set so linebackers and safeties are already keying run fits.
Check the box count and safety depth before the snap, if the defense has two deep safeties and a stacked front, the play fake will hold linebackers just long enough for the deep in route to sit open.
Against man coverage, the deep in route wins as a natural man beater by picking off trailing defenders in the crossing traffic, so key on the linebacker or slot defender covering that route first.
Use the jet motion pre-snap to force the defense to declare man or zone, if a defender runs with the motion man across the formation you know you are getting man coverage and should prioritize the corner route on an island.
Pair this play in a sequence with Jet Fk Shovel or Fk Jet HB Shovel on earlier downs so the defense respects the shovel run fake, which sets up this deeper shot play off the same look.
