Breakdown

Jet Sweep out of I Form Slot 21 personnel is a pure edge run play designed to get your motion man the ball in space before the defense can flow to it. The receiver goes in jet motion across the formation, takes the handoff on the snap, and follows a perimeter blocking scheme built on the playside tackle, wing, and receiver blocks to seal the edge while the fullback and off guard pull to lead through the alley. This is not a man or zone beater in the passing sense since it is a run play, and the primary read progression is simple: identify the first threat off the edge (usually a DE or OLB), press the block, then read the alley defender (safety or overhang LB) to decide whether to bounce outside or cut upfield.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a fast flowing Mike or Sam linebacker who diagnoses jet motion immediately and beats the pulling blockers to the edge, this kills the play before it develops. Overloaded boundary fronts with an extra defender set to the motion side signal that the defense has scouted the tendency, bail to a play-action shot or Duo run instead. User controlled defensive ends who stay home and do not bite on the fake are the most common way skilled opponents shut this down, so watch their leverage before the snap. Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with safeties rotating down late can still get an alley defender there in time, key the safety depth and closing speed as your cutback trigger. Blitzes off the backside edge rarely affect Jet Sweep since the play flows away from that pressure, but a contain blitz called to the play side alerts you to abandon the run and cut it back inside immediately.

Usage Tips

Snap the ball as soon as the jet motion man crosses the frame so the defense has minimal time to diagnose flow and shift linebackers over the top.

Attack defenses that show heavy inside run fits or stacked box looks since Jet Sweep exploits horizontal displacement rather than vertical power.

Use this play on early downs or short yardage third downs where defenses may be sitting in base personnel expecting a play-action shot or inside handoff.

Pair Jet Sweep with PA Jet Sweep and Fk Jet Fk Shovel from this same set to keep defenders honest on the jet motion, forcing linebackers to freeze instead of flowing hard to the edge.

If the defense shows man coverage with the corner crashing down on motion, consider audibling to HB Toss or HB Stretch to attack the same edge with a different blocking angle.
