Jet Sweep out of the I Form Slot set is a pure edge run play built around pre-snap motion to sell speed in space. The slot receiver goes in jet motion across the formation and takes the handoff from the QB, hitting the edge behind kickout and lead blocks from the FB and playside tackle or TE. This is a horizontal stretch run designed to beat overpursuing linebackers and undisciplined edge defenders, with the primary read being the playside alley: bounce it outside if the edge is sealed, or cut it up inside the kickout block if the defense flows too hard toward the sideline.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense shifts its linebackers or safety toward the motion man, since that flow indicates man coverage principles or a run blitz keyed to the jet sweep. Look at the alignment of the play side defensive end or outside linebacker: if he is crashing hard inside pre-snap, the edge is soft and you should plan to bounce outside immediately. Post-snap, key the flow of the second level defenders, if the linebackers overreact to the jet motion and flow too fast to the sideline, cut upfield behind the kickout block for a big gain. This play is neutralized by teams that play assignment-sound scrape exchange technique on the edge, where the DE stays home and the linebacker replaces him outside. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the motion or sitting outside contain, since a disciplined user defender can blow this play up before the handoff even happens.

Usage Tips

Use this play against defenses that show aggressive linebacker flow or heavy inside run fits, since the jet motion pulls defenders out of position before the snap. Watch the defensive ends and outside linebackers pre-snap: if they crash down on motion instead of staying home, you have a lane to the sideline immediately. Pair Jet Sweep with PA Jet Sweep and Fk Jet HB Shovel in the same play calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the outside run and the play-action or shovel fake off identical motion. Run this on early downs or in short yardage when defenses are keyed to stop inside runs like HB Blast or HB Power O, since the perimeter speed exploits a defense that has sold out to stop the interior. Avoid calling this into defenses with fast flow linebackers or a spy assigned to the jet motion man, since disciplined edge containment kills this play before it develops.
