Breakdown

PA Boot Comeback fakes the handoff and rolls the QB out to the boot side while the offense sells run action. The far outside receiver runs a comeback off the sideline, the slot receiver works a deep crosser over the top from the opposite side, and a third target runs a shallow drag underneath the crosser toward the flat. This is a play-action rollout designed to attack zone defenders who bite on the run fake, with the comeback as the primary read against off coverage and the deep crosser as the answer if a defender jumps the comeback.

Defensive Reads

Watch for the cornerback on the comeback side, if he sits at five to six yards of cushion and stays flat footed he will jump the comeback route so look to the crosser instead. Key the flow of the linebackers at the snap, if they crash hard toward the run fake the underneath drag and crosser will be wide open in the vacated middle of the field. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high defenses are more vulnerable to the comeback since the corner often has no safety help over the top. This play struggles against teams that spy the QB on the boot with a linebacker or defensive end, since that spy can close throwing lanes and force a checkdown or scramble. Watch for user blitzes off the edge on the boot side, if the defense sends a user rush off that edge you need to get the ball out on the comeback quickly before the pocket collapses.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs when the defense has shown aggressive run fits against your I Form personnel, since the play fake sells harder against teams keying the fullback and halfback. Check safety depth pre-snap, if both safeties are shallow or a linebacker is cheating up into the box, the play action window opens up and you can hit the comeback or crosser before the rotation recovers. Roll the QB with the play action commitment and get outside the tackle box quickly, this gives you a run threat with your legs if both routes are covered. Pair this with HB Power O and PA Ctr Waggle out of the same set so defenders respect the run and boot action equally, making it harder for user linebackers to sit on the crosser. Save this for third and medium or second and long situations where defenders are more willing to bite on the run fake, and avoid it against teams playing heavy zone drop shells with linebackers spying the boot.
