Breakdown

PA FB Flat is a play-action pass out of I Form Slot with 21 personnel that fakes the run to hold the linebackers before releasing four routes into the pattern. The diagram shows the outside receiver running a deep vertical to clear the top of the coverage, the slot receiver breaking on a corner route toward the sideline, the TE working a shallow crossing route underneath, and the FB (red route) releasing hard up the seam through the middle of the field off the play fake. The primary read progression starts with the FB seam route as the initial hot key against man coverage or a blown fake, then works to the TE crosser as the intermediate zone beater, before going to the deep corner or vertical as the shot play if the safety bites on the run action.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebackers stepping up hard on the play fake, this confirms the FB seam route will be open behind them against man or zone. A single high safety pre-snap indicates the defense is vulnerable to the deep outside vertical if the corner gets beat off the line. Cover 3 with an underneath zone defender flowing to the flat can undercut the FB seam, so be ready to check down to the TE crosser instead. User-controlled defenders lurking in the middle of the field will jump the FB route, so watch the strong safety or mike linebacker depth before committing to that throw. Man coverage on the TE with no help underneath opens the shallow crosser as an easy completion if the FB seam is taken away.

Usage Tips

Sell the play fake by holding the play-action button and letting the FB action fully develop before your eyes go through the progression.

Use this on early downs like 1st or 2nd and short to medium yardage when defenses are more likely to respect the run and trigger linebacker flow.

Pre-snap, look for a single high safety or a defense showing run support in the box since that tells you the FB seam will have room to work against a vacated middle.

If the corner over the slot receiver is playing off coverage, hot route the slot corner route into a comeback or hitch to beat a soft zone shell.

Pair this with HB Blast or HB Lead Dive earlier in the sequence to get linebackers keying run fits, then hit PA FB Flat to punish overaggressive run defense.
