Off the play fake, the outside receiver runs a deep vertical seam (red route), the slot receiver breaks outside on a corner route, the TE runs a delayed out to the flat, and the backside receiver runs a shallow drag across the field, giving you a true four-level stretch from deep to short. This is a play-action shot designed to beat man coverage and single-high looks, with the primary read progression going from the deep seam to the corner route, then working down to the flat and drag as checkdowns if the safety cheats over the top.

Defensive Reads

Read the linebacker depth immediately after the snap, if they crash hard on the run fake and lose contain on the flat and drag, that confirms man coverage or a run blitz call. Watch the deep safety rotation, a single high safety who bites on the play fake leaves the seam and corner routes wide open behind him. If both safeties stay deep and split the field in a two high shell, the vertical seam and corner route become tougher throws, so key the underneath defenders for the drag and flat instead. Identify any user controlled defender lurking near the slot or TE alignment, since a spy or lurk defender sitting at the second level can jump the flat or drag route if the quarterback holds the ball too long. Watch for cornerback press alignment on the outside receiver running the seam, if he presses and shows no safety help over the top, that route wins immediately against man coverage.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or in max protect situations where the defense is showing run blitz or heavy boxes, since the play fake needs linebackers to bite for the shot to develop.

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties bail out into a deep zone shell, be ready to check down quickly to the flat or drag instead of forcing the seam or corner route.

Motion or shift out of the I Form Slot look to bait linebackers into run fits, then trust the play fake to hold them for an extra beat before releasing your reads.

If the corner on the slot receiver squats on the flat or shows aggressive man coverage, take the corner route or the vertical seam immediately since those routes will beat him over the top.
