Sail Y Shake is a classic sail concept out of the I Form Slot set that stretches the field horizontally and vertically at the same time. The Y (tight end) runs a deep corner route from the slot X, the outside receiver from the same side X releases underneath on a shallow drag that crosses the field, and the backside X runs a deep post that cuts across the field opposite the sail. On the strong side, the flat X curls out and settles underneath the corner route, creating a high low stretch on the sideline defender while the drag occupies the middle of the field. This is a zone beater built for Cover 2 and Cover 3, with the primary read starting on the corner route to see if the flat defender bites, then working down to the flat route sitting underneath, and finally checking the deep crossing drag if the play holds up.
Defensive Reads
Identify the safety alignment pre snap, two deep safeties signal Cover 2 or Cover 4 which this sail concept is designed to exploit. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he widens with the corner route the underneath flat route will be wide open for an easy completion. Key the middle linebacker or nickel drop on the deep crossing route, a lurking user controlled defender sitting in that throwing lane can bait a pick if the drag is thrown late. Against Cover 3, the deep corner route from the Y should occupy the deep third defender while the flat route settles underneath, so check if the corner defender sinks too deep and leaves the flat exposed. Man coverage with no help over the top can be vulnerable if the corner route wins on release, but disciplined man defenders trailing the crosser can undercut the throwing lane if the quarterback holds the ball too long.
Usage Tips
Attack Cover 2 shells by reading the flat defender first, if he sinks with the corner route the flat sit becomes an easy pitch and catch. Use pre snap motion or a hot route on the flat X to adjust his depth if the defense shows a hard squat corner look. This play pairs well with PA Sprint HB Flat or PA FB Flat since it looks similar out of the same I Form Slot personnel but hits quicker underneath, keeping linebackers honest. Call this on second and medium to second and long when defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells rather than bring pressure. If the defense shows single high safety looks pre snap, prioritize the deep crossing route since it can split the difference between the hook zones and the deep half defender.
