This is a run action, gap exploiting play that plays like a run but delivers the ball via a short shovel pass, making it a strong misdirection concept against aggressive run fits rather than a traditional man or zone beater.
Defensive Reads
Key the play side linebacker depth at the snap, if they crash hard toward jet motion the shovel lane opens immediately behind them. Watch for a user controlled defender spying the fullback or halfback in the shovel lane, that lurk can blow up the entire concept before it develops. Against gap sound run defense or a defense that stays home and does not bite on jet motion, this play loses its misdirection advantage and gets tracked down for minimal gain. Aggressive fits from Cover 1 or Cover 3 with linebackers flowing hard to the jet action are where this play hits big. Read the defensive line's gap discipline, if the interior stays home instead of pursuing the fake, the shovel runner has nowhere to go.
Usage Tips
Run this out of 21 personnel on early downs when the defense is showing a heavy box or has been biting on jet sweep action all game. Watch pre-snap for linebackers cheating toward the jet motion side, that flow is exactly what sets up the shovel underneath. Use the jet motion to bait aggressive edge defenders and safeties who key run fits, then let the shovel exploit the vacated interior gap. Pair this with Jet Sweep and PA Jet Sweep earlier in a series so the defense over-commits to the perimeter threat before you go back to the shovel action. Best called on 2nd and short or 1st and 10 to keep defenders honest and avoid predictable shovel usage on obvious passing downs.
