PA Power O opens with a play-action fake off the Power O run action to hold the linebackers, then releases three receivers into a route combo built to attack zone coverage. The backside receiver runs a quick hitch/comeback for a built in check down, the middle receiver runs a deep out that settles in the intermediate zone, and the outside receiver on the play side takes the corner route vertical up the sideline. The primary read progression starts with the corner route up top against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, works down to the deep out sitting in the void, and finishes with the hitch as the safety valve if the play fake buys enough time.
Defensive Reads
Check safety depth pre-snap since a single high safety will struggle to cover the corner route and the deep out at the same time. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they step up hard on the run fake it confirms man or zone defenders are biting and the deep out should be open in the window behind them. Identify Cover 3 shells as a prime target for this play since the deep out sits right in the flat to deep third seam. Beware of Cover 4 quarters coverage with disciplined corners who can sink under the corner route and take away the top of the progression. Key on user blitzes off the edge since the play fake can leave the quarterback exposed if the offensive line does not account for extra rushers.
Usage Tips
Sell the run fake by holding the play-action button long enough to freeze linebackers before working through your progression.
Look for two high safety shells pre-snap since the corner route can win over the top if a single deep defender has to cover two verticals.
Use the hitch as an instant answer against blitz heavy calls when the offensive line cannot hold up long enough for the corner route to develop.
Pair this play with HB Power O and HB Counter earlier in a drive so linebackers start keying run fits, making the play-action freeze more effective on PA Power O later.
Best called on early downs like first and ten or second and short where defenses are more willing to sell out on the run look.
