PA Power O sells the Power O run fake out of the I Form Slot 21 personnel look before releasing three routes downfield. The fullback runs a quick flat check release out of the backfield, the TE/inline receiver climbs to a deep in-breaking dig around 15 yards, and the outside receiver stems vertically before breaking to a corner route up the sideline, while the slot receiver on the right runs an out and up the flat that turns into a deep comeback along the boundary. This is a play-action man beater built off a heavy run fake, and the primary read progression starts with the flat/check release underneath, then works to the deep out breaking route on the boundary, and finally the deep dig if the corner route occupies the safety.

Defensive Reads

Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, if they step up hard on the run fake, the deep dig and corner route will have room to work behind them. Identify single high versus two high shells before the snap, single high defenses are more vulnerable to the deep out and corner combo since the safety has to cover more ground. Key the boundary cornerback's technique, if he is playing tight man with no safety help over the top, the corner route can win over the top quickly. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in a lurk spot near the dig route, aggressive user play at linebacker depth can jump the intermediate crossing route if you hold the ball too long. Diagnose blitz packages immediately, if extra rushers are showing pre-snap, expect the fullback flat route to be the answer since protection will be outnumbered.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) so the defense respects the Power O run fake and linebackers step up on the play fake.

Check safety depth pre-snap, if you see two deep safeties sitting at 10 plus yards, they are not biting on the run fake and you should look to the quick flat route to the fullback for a safe checkdown.

Against single high safety looks (Cover 1 or Cover 3), the corner route and deep dig combo will stress the boundary corner and the deep middle, so hold the ball a beat longer to let those routes develop.

Pair this with HB Power O and HB Counter earlier in a drive to condition the defense to sell hard on run fits, then hit this shot play once linebackers start creeping into the box on early downs.

Use the fullback flat route as a built-in answer to blitzes, if you see a linebacker or safety crashing downhill pre-snap, get the ball out quick before the protection breaks down.
