Breakdown

HB Stretch out of the I Form Slot 21 personnel package is an outside zone run play with the fullback and offensive line flowing laterally toward the point of attack before climbing to their zone landmarks. The diagram shows the halfback taking a wide aiming point behind the fullback lead blocker, with the offensive line stepping in unison toward the edge to force the front seven to flow horizontally before the runner presses the cutback lane. This is a pure zone run play designed to stretch the defense east to west, and the primary read progression starts with the play side edge, then to the fullback's kickout or seal block, then back to the cutback lane if the backside pursuit overruns the play.

Defensive Reads

Watch the defensive end and outside linebacker to the play side, if they crash hard down the line the cutback lane opens immediately. Key the play side safety's run fit angle, a fast downhill safety in run support will erase the stretch before it develops. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with light boxes, this play beats those looks because there is no extra defender to set the edge. Watch for a 3-4 under front or a stacked box with 8 in the box, this heavy front shuts down HB Stretch by winning the edge before the line can reach block. Post-snap, track the backside linebacker's pursuit angle, an over-aggressive flow defender who chases the play side creates the cutback window the runner needs.

Usage Tips

Run HB Stretch out of a run heavy personnel package to keep base defense on the field before dialing up PA Ctr Waggle or PA Power O off the same look.

Check the defensive line's shade pre-snap: if both defensive tackles are shaded to the play side, audible to HB Counter or HB Power O to attack the vacated backside gap.

Use manual control on the fullback if the CPU logic whiffs on the kickout block against an overhang defender or slot corner.

This play is most effective on early downs (1st and 2nd, 2nd and short) since it establishes horizontal flow that sets up cutback runs and later play-action shots.

If linebackers are stacked tight to the line pre-snap expecting run, mix in HB Stretch Alert Bubble or HB Stretch Alert Bubble KO to get a free access throw to the slot if the defense overcommits.
