HB Stretch Alert Bubble

Breakdown

HB Stretch Alert Bubble is an outside zone run out of I Form Slot with an alert audible built in that automatically throws a bubble screen to the slot receiver if the defense shows a hard edge blitz or overloaded run front. The diagram shows the offensive line flowing laterally to stretch the defense wide, with the HB reading the edge and cutting upfield once he sees daylight, while the wide receiver runs a curl-in as a check option if the alert is triggered before the snap. This is primarily a zone run play with a built-in RPO-style alert, not a straight play-action or dropback pass, so the primary read progression starts with the playside edge defender and flows to the bubble alert if that defender crashes down immediately.

Defensive Reads

Watch the playside defensive end and outside linebacker pre-snap since their leverage tells you whether the alert bubble is live. A defender crashing hard inside or blitzing off the edge is the key trigger for the bubble screen to hit for easy yards. Zone coverage shells with a cornerback sitting deep and no immediate flat defender leave the bubble wide open, so cornerback depth is a major pre-snap read. Stacked boxes with eight or more defenders in the run fit signal the offense should lean on the alert bubble rather than force the zone run. Post-snap, look for a user-controlled linebacker flowing hard to string out the stretch run, which can be countered by cutting back if the backside pursuit overruns the play.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap to scan the box count and edge defender alignment before deciding whether to trust the run or trigger the alert bubble. If you see a defensive end or outside linebacker crashing hard down the line at the snap, throw the bubble immediately since the alert receiver will already be releasing outside. Run this on early downs in run-heavy sets to keep defenses honest, then follow up later with HB Toss or Jet Sweep out of the same formation to punish overaggressive edge defenders. Against man coverage with the corner playing tight on the bubble receiver, stick with the zone run since the bubble window shrinks. Pair this with HB Stretch (no alert) and 26 Duo Alert Bubble to keep defenders guessing between stretch zone, duo gap run, and the bubble screen check.
