HB Power O out of the I Form Slot set is a gap-scheme power run that pulls the backside guard through the hole while the fullback leads through as the primary blocker for the halfback. The diagram shows a tight formation with the offensive line blocking down and a lead blocker isolating on the play side linebacker, creating a designated running lane between the tackle and tight end. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the play side hole, read the fullback's lead block, and cut off the pulling guard depending on how the second level defenders flow.
Defensive Reads
Watch for linebacker depth at the snap since shallow linebackers crashing downhill can blow up the play before the fullback gets a clean angle. Identify safety alignment pre-snap because a safety cheating into the box signals a run blitz look that this play struggles against. Key the play side defensive end and tackle, if they are getting up field they can be sealed easily but if they hold their gap the lead blocker may not get a clean kick out. This play beats light boxes and base fronts where linebackers are reading run late, but it gets shut down by user controlled defenders spying the fullback or crashing the pull lane. Look for run blitz packages or a linebacker showing blitz on the play side edge, since Power O has no answer for an unblocked edge defender in the backfield.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs like first and second and short to medium yardage situations where defenses are not stacked with extra pass rushers.
Check the box count pre-snap and avoid this play into six or seven man fronts unless you plan to use pre-snap motion to identify the extra defender.
Use the fullback lead block as your visual key and stay patient behind the pulling guard instead of rushing the hole.
