The offensive line executes outside zone steps, working horizontal combo blocks to stretch the defense laterally before the HB presses the edge and reads the flow of the play side linebackers and defensive end. If the box is loaded or the slot corner sits in the flat with no support, the QB can alert the bubble screen to the slot as a fast throw beater against aggressive run blitzes. The primary read progression is box count and edge leverage first, then a quick glance to the bubble alert if the run lane is not there.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a stacked box with eight or nine defenders near the line of scrimmage, this is the trigger to take the bubble alert instead of handing the ball off into a losing gap battle. Identify slot corner depth pre snap, if he is playing off with outside leverage the run has room to bounce outside, if he is squatting inside expect a jet to the flat that shuts down the bubble option. Key the play side linebacker flow after the snap, if he crashes hard downhill on zone action the cutback lane opens for the HB, if he sits and reads the backfield he is spying the stretch and forcing a longer developing play. Look for user controlled defenders flashing down into the box at the snap, this is a common counter to stretch runs and is exactly when the bubble alert punishes the defense for abandoning coverage. Cover 3 and Cover 1 with man match principles on the slot receiver are the toughest shells to beat here since they clog the bubble throw and still fit the run gaps, while Cover 2 shells with soft slot coverage and blitz heavy fronts are where this play shines.
Usage Tips
Check the box count pre snap and count defenders inside the tackles, if you see six or more in the box with the slot corner playing tight man, throw the bubble alert immediately for a numbers advantage. Use this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep defenses honest between run and quick pass without changing personnel. Motion the slot receiver before the snap to confirm man versus zone coverage, if the defender follows across the formation it is man and the bubble alert becomes a strong option against blitz looks. Pair this play with HB Stretch and HB Toss in the same set so the defense cannot key on the alert tag and starts biting on outside zone action every snap.
