PA Flood from the Slot I Form uses a play action fake to hold the linebackers before flooding one side of the field with three levels of routes. The diagram shows a deep route breaking to the corner, a corner route breaking outside underneath it, and a shallow crosser working from the opposite side underneath both, creating a true three level flood to one half of the field. This is a classic Cover 3 beater since it stretches the deep third defender and the flat defender vertically and horizontally at the same time, and the primary read progresses from the deep corner route to the intermediate out breaking route and down to the underneath crosser if the flood side gets taken away.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety alignment before the snap since PA Flood is designed to exploit Cover 3 and Cover 1 where one defender has to defend multiple levels on the flood side. Watch the flat or cloud defender post snap, if he widens with the corner route the intermediate out route will be open underneath him. Key the deep third cornerback's leverage, if he plays outside shade the underneath crosser and corner route combo will beat him inside. Beware user controlled linebackers dropping into a lurk technique in the shallow crosser's zone since they can jump the underneath route if the quarterback stares it down. This concept is shut down by two deep safety shells like Cover 2 or Cover 4 since the extra deep defender erases the vertical stretch and forces the ball underneath into a shrinking window.

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety shells like Cover 3 or Cover 1 pre snap since the vertical stretch on the flood side punishes a defender trying to cover both the deep and intermediate zones. Use the play action fake on early downs in run heavy personnel to freeze linebackers and widen passing lanes for the corner route. If the cornerback sinks with the deep route, hot route the underneath crosser into a settle or hitch to give your quarterback a quicker outlet against a hard closing flat defender.
