HB Toss out of the I Form Slot formation shows the HB taking a lateral toss from the QB and attacking the edge, with the FB leading through the hole to kick out or seal the first defender off the corner. The offensive line reach blocks and washes down flow, while the two outside receivers stay locked into vertical releases to occupy the cornerbacks and force them to hold their assignments instead of crashing down on the run fit. This is strictly a run play designed to beat overaggressive fronts and light boxes, with the primary read progression starting on the FB's lead block: follow the FB to the point of attack, then bounce outside if the edge is sealed or cut it back inside if the defense overpursues.
Defensive Reads
Key the offensive line's initial reach steps at the snap. If the entire line is blocking down and away from the play call side, that confirms toss action and you should trigger outside contain immediately. Watch the FB's release path out of the backfield. He is your lead blocker key, and shooting the gap he is aiming for with a user-controlled defender can blow up the play before the HB turns the corner. Set the edge with a force defender, typically a DE, OLB, or slot corner, who can string the run outside without getting kicked out. Losing contain on the edge is the number one way this play breaks for a big gain. Play a two-high safety shell to keep an eye on both the toss and any play-action off this look, since the two receivers running vertical routes can turn into shot plays if you sell out too hard on the run. Bring an overload blitz or stack the box with an extra linebacker on early downs when you diagnose I Form Slot personnel, since numbers in the box will beat this play before the fake ever develops.
Usage Tips
Call this play when you see a light box, six or fewer defenders in the run fit, since the FB lead block needs numbers advantage to spring the HB outside.
Check the cornerback alignment pre-snap. If they are pressed or aligned with outside leverage, the toss to the edge has a natural running lane because the CB cannot fold inside to help in run support.
Use motion or a quick pre-snap glance at the safeties. Two-high shells with safeties staying deep are ideal since it signals the linebackers will be the only run support defenders you have to beat with the edge speed of the toss.
Pair this with HB Power O and HB Counter from the same set so linebackers have to respect both inside gap runs and outside toss action, which slows their flow and widens run lanes.
Avoid calling this into stacked eight-man boxes or against defenses showing heavy blitz pressure, since the play needs time to develop and a fast edge defender can blow it up before the FB gets a clean kick out block.
Best used on early downs, first and ten or second and short, to keep the defense honest and set up play-action shots like PA Power O later in the drive.
