PA Cross F Wheel is a play-action pass out of the I Form Slot set that sells the run fake before attacking downfield with a deep crossing route and a wheel route from the fullback. Post snap, two receivers from the backside run deep crossing routes into the void vacated by the run fake while the F back releases from the backfield on a wheel route up the sideline, and the slot receiver runs a deep out breaking to the corner. The tight end or blocker in the backfield stays in to protect while the halfback runs a check release flat route underneath, giving the quarterback a simple flat read if the deep options are covered. Primary progression starts with the wheel route against man coverage matchups on linebackers, then works to the deep crosser, and checks down to the flat route as the outlet.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage on the fullback out of the backfield is the biggest tell, if a linebacker walks out to shadow the F back pre-snap the wheel route is live and should be your first read. Check the deep safety alignment before the snap, single high shells leave the deep crosser exposed against man coverage underneath while two high shells put extra help over the top of the wheel route. Watch for a lurking linebacker or nickel defender sitting in the shallow crossing lane, this is the biggest threat to the deep crosser and can bait an interception if the quarterback throws into it without clearing the read. Blitz-heavy zone pressure defenses attack this play well since the play fake does not hold blitzing linebackers long, so if you see extra rushers crashing downhill pre-snap get the ball out quickly to the flat route. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can undercut the wheel route early in its stem, so look for corners sitting at the numbers pre-snap since that alignment signals trouble for the wheel route developing outside.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs when the defense is respecting the run look off I Form personnel, since the play action freeze can hold linebackers just long enough to open the wheel route.

Pre-snap, identify if a linebacker or safety is aligned over the fullback out of the backfield, because the wheel route wins hardest when a linebacker has to run vertically with the F back in man coverage.

If you see two deep safeties, prioritize the deep crossing route since the wheel may run into help from a deep half defender.

Hot route the halfback to a flat or check release if you are worried about pressure, this gives you a quick answer against blitz-heavy defenses and protects the play call in third and short situations.
