Breakdown

PA Cross F Wheel is a play-action pass out of the I Form Slot set with 21 personnel that sells a run fake before flooding the field vertically. The two outside receivers run a deep crosser and a corner route into the opposite third, the slot receiver runs a shallow drag underneath, and the fullback releases out of the backfield on a wheel route up the sideline for a man beater against linebackers. The primary read progression starts with the fullback wheel against man coverage or a blown assignment, then works to the deep crosser sitting behind linebackers and in front of safeties, with the corner route as the boundary shot if the defense rolls single high.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the linebacker assigned to the fullback out of the backfield since that matchup decides whether the wheel route is live. Check safety depth and alignment: a two-high shell signals the crosser and corner route will have to work underneath support, while a single-high look opens the deep corner as a shot play. Post-snap, watch for a linebacker spy or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, since that defender can undercut the deep crosser if he reads the quarterback's eyes. This play struggles against man coverage with a deep safety help over the top, since the corner route and crosser both funnel into that help defender. Cover 3 with a fast-flowing linebacker to the fullback's side shuts down the wheel route quickly, so if you see linebackers sink hard to their zone drops post-snap, look immediately to the crosser instead.

Usage Tips

Run this from under center with your run game established so the play-action freeze actually holds the linebackers for a beat.

Check the fullback matchup before the snap: if a linebacker or slower defender is lined up over him, target the wheel route immediately since it wins most one-on-one reps deep.

Use the deep crosser as your primary progression against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, sitting it down in the soft spot behind the linebacker level.

Pair this call with HB Stretch or HB Power O earlier in a series so the defense bites on run keys, making the play-action fake more effective on this shot play.

Best used on second or third and medium in play-calling sequences where you have already shown run tendencies, since the fullback wheel and crosser both need a slight coverage bite to fully open.
