PA Sprint HB Flat is a play-action sprint out concept run from the I Form Slot set with 21 personnel. The fake to the HB pulls the play-side linebackers up, then the fullback releases to the flat on a shallow route (red) while the HB (blue) runs a quick out toward the sideline underneath. On the backside, two receivers stack vertical routes, with the outside receiver breaking to a corner route and the slot receiver running a deep dig, giving the QB a two level read on the boot side and a deep shot if the safety bites on the flat action. Primary progression starts with the FB flat route for the quick throw, works to the HB flat/out route as the second level check, and comes back to the corner and dig combo on the backside if the play-action freezes the safeties for a big play downfield.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a defender sitting flat footed at the line who could be spying the run fake, that is your cue this defense reads play-action quickly and you should get the ball out fast. Identify two high safeties pre-snap, this usually means Cover 2 or Cover 4 zone shells where the flat routes are the easy answer since underneath defenders have to respect the run fake first. If the strong side linebacker or nickel corner sprints hard to the flat immediately post-snap, that is a sign of a scraping defense that jumps run action, look to the backside dig sitting behind the vacated zone. Beware of a blitzing corner or overload pressure from the boot side, since sprint out concepts can get sacked quickly if the edge is not accounted for by the tight end or offensive line. Man coverage with a linebacker matched on the FB is a green light matchup, the FB flat route should win versus a slower linebacker in space almost every time.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or second and short to sell the run fake and get linebackers flowing before the sprint out.

Check the safety depth pre-snap, if you see a single high safety cheating toward the boot side, hot route the FB flat into a quick seam to attack the vacated middle.

Against man coverage, trust the backside corner and dig combo since the play-action rollout buys the QB extra time to climb the pocket and throw off platform.

Pair this with HB Power O or HB Dive Alert Bubble earlier in a series so the defense keys run action and the play-action fake actually holds linebackers.

On third and medium, prioritize the HB flat as the built in check down since the sprint out limits your reads to the boot side of the field.
