26 Duo Alert Bubble is a Power Run play out of I Form with 21 personnel that blends a Duo blocking scheme with an Alert bubble screen check built in. The offensive line double teams at the point of attack and climbs to the second level, letting the HB read the Mike linebacker while the slot receiver releases into a bubble route as an automatic outlet if the alert is triggered. This is primarily a run play designed to attack light boxes, but the Alert tag makes it a built in answer versus overloaded fronts or blitz looks since you can throw the bubble as a quick perimeter release without checking the play at the line.
Defensive Reads
Count the box pre-snap and identify if the defense is showing an odd or even front, since a light box with only five or six defenders favors sticking with the Duo run. Watch the slot corner or nickel alignment, if he is playing off with outside leverage the bubble access throw is there for an easy gain if you alert out of the run. Key the Mike linebacker's depth and fill angle after the snap, a fast downhill Mike who beats the double team can blow up the play design before the HB reaches the crease. Look for man coverage indicators like the slot defender turning his hips and running with motion, this signals it is safer to stay with the run since the bubble will not have room to work. Beware of overload blitzes or a slot defender walked up showing blitz, in these situations checking to the bubble is almost automatic since the perimeter numbers advantage is immediate.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and use the Alert bubble as your answer when the defense shows six or more in the box or rolls a corner down into run support.
Use HB Blast, FB Dive Strong, and HB Lead Dive earlier in a series to sell downhill run tendencies before mixing in 26 Duo Alert Bubble so linebackers stay honest on their run fits.
If the slot corner is pressed or the defense shows Cover 0 or man match with no help over the bubble, trust the alert and take the free access throw immediately off the snap.
On early downs in normal personnel matchups this play punishes teams that crash extra defenders inside, so use it as a changeup after establishing HB Stretch or HB Power O to keep second level defenders guessing.
Pair this with HB Stretch Alert Bubble and HB Dive Alert Bubble in the same game plan so opponents cannot key on formation or blocking scheme once they see the bubble receiver align in the slot.
