HB Lead Dive out of the I Form Slot set is a pure downhill run play with a fullback lead blocker paving the way for the halfback through the middle of the formation. The diagram shows the FB attacking the point of attack directly ahead of the HB, with the offensive line blocking straight ahead in a base scheme, and both WRs running vertical routes to hold their cornerbacks and clear space from run support. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read is the FB lead block: the HB should press the hole behind the fullback and read whether to bounce outside or stick inside based on how the linebackers flow to the point of attack.

Defensive Reads

Look for linebacker depth before the snap, if the Mike and Will are sitting shallow near the line of scrimmage they are keying run and will fill the dive lane fast. Watch safety alignment, a single high safety with stacked box defenders signals run support is loaded and this play will get less room to breathe. This run is most effective against base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts that spread out to respect the WR vertical routes, since it forces linebackers to respect pass drops before committing to the run fit. It gets shut down by gap-control defenses and cover 1 or cover 3 robber looks where defenders key the FB block immediately and fill the A or B gap. If the user controls a linebacker and sits in the hole reading the mesh point instead of biting on the FB fake, the dive has nowhere to go and you should look to other plays in the set.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium yardage, when you want to establish the run and set up play-action later in the set. Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more defenders stacked in the box, consider audibling to HB Toss or Jet Sweep to attack the perimeter instead. Motion the FB or check defender alignment to confirm the fullback has a clean lead angle, since a stunting defensive tackle can blow up the lead block before it develops. Pair this play with PA Ctr Waggle or PA Power O from the same personnel group to keep linebackers honest once they start crashing down on the dive look. Against aggressive user blitzers flying downhill, trust the FB to pick up the free hitter and stay patient behind him rather than trying to bounce it outside immediately.
