Inside Cross is a man beater built around a deep crossing route that works underneath and behind linebackers while a shallow drag or in cut occupies the middle of the field. Out of the I Form Slot 21 personnel, the fullback and tackles handle a standard five man protection to give the quarterback time for the crosser to develop, while the backside receiver runs a complementary in or dig to hold safeties. The primary read progression starts with the crossing route working man coverage leverage, then works to the underneath drag or flat option if the crosser is picked up, with the deep route as a shot play answer against busted coverage.

Defensive Reads

Identify whether the defense shows man or zone pre-snap by watching corner alignment, tight man coverage on the outside receivers is the green light to trust the crosser. Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow in a zone drop he can undercut the crossing route and force you to check down early. Be alert for a user controlled linebacker sitting in a lurk technique in the shallow middle zone, since that defender can jump the crossing route if the quarterback stares it down. Cover 3 with a rat linebacker spying the middle of the field is the toughest shell for this concept, since the extra defender clogs the crosser's path. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers up the middle can shut down Inside Cross before the route develops, so check protection or hot route the fullback into a quick release against heavy interior pressure.

Usage Tips

Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap like a single high safety and corners lined up tight on the receivers before calling Inside Cross, since the crossing route thrives against man to man leverage.

Hot route the fullback into a check release or flat route to give yourself an extra outlet if the defense brings a nano blitz off the edge, since the base protection can struggle against overload fronts.

Use play action from this same personnel grouping, such as PA Ctr Waggle or PA FB Flare, to freeze linebackers after you have shown Inside Cross a few times, since the run action from I Form 21 personnel sells well.

This play is most effective on second and medium to second and long, since it takes a full count for the crosser to clear traffic and reach its window.

Pair Inside Cross with Double Slant or HB Draw in your play calling sequence to keep the defense guessing between quick game, ground game, and the developing crosser off similar formation tendencies.
