Inside Cross out of I Form Slot 21 personnel is a man beater built around a crossing route that works underneath the linebackers while a deeper route occupies the safety over the top. The FB and HB stay in to support the protection or leak out late, giving the QB a checkdown against blitz-heavy fronts. Primary read progression starts with the crosser working across the field, then works to the secondary vertical or out breaking route if the crosser is taken away, and finally checks down to the backfield outlet against pressure.
Defensive Reads
Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap since a shallow drop signals he is sitting on the crosser and will jump the route Key the strong safety alignment pre-snap, if he rotates down into the box before the snap it usually means man coverage or a blitz look is coming Beats Cover 1 and Cover 2 man because the crosser drags defenders into traffic and creates natural rub opportunities Cover 3 sink zones with a spy or lurk defender in the middle of the field can undercut the crosser if the user jumps the route early Nano blitzes and inside pressure packages can beat this play before the crosser develops, so check protection numbers and consider a hot route to the FB or HB as a quick outlet
Usage Tips
Pre-snap identify whether the defense is showing man or zone by checking if the corners are pressed on the outside receivers or sitting off in a zone shell
If you see Cover 3 or Cover 4 with linebackers sitting deep in their zone drops, hot route the crosser to sit down in the void between the underneath and intermediate zones
Against man coverage, snap the ball quickly and trust the crosser to create natural separation off the pick or rub created by the formation traffic
Use this on early down and medium yardage situations, second and long or third and medium works best since the crosser needs time to develop
Pair this play in sequence with HB Stretch and PA Ctr Waggle from the same set so the defense has to respect the run and play action look before you come back to this crossing concept
