Breakdown

Mtn Inside Zone Split is an inside zone run out of Shotgun Bunch Wide with a pre-snap motion sending a bunch receiver in a shallow swing path across the formation before the snap. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, sliding as a unit to the play side while the HB reads the double team and cutback lanes off the play side guard and center. This is a pure zone run play designed to hit downhill quickly, with the primary read progression being the HB pressing the play side alignment first, then working to the cutback lane if the front flows hard.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth at the snap, since shallow linebackers crashing hard down will open cutback lanes for the HB. If the defense runs a heavy 4-3 or 3-4 front with the middle linebacker sitting in a run fit, expect the offense to test the cutback rather than force it play side. Blitzing off the edge can disrupt the zone track before the double team forms, so look for user-controlled edge defenders crashing inside to blow up the scheme. Defenses that flow hard to the motion side without honoring the cutback are vulnerable, so a disciplined backside linebacker or safety filling the cutback lane is the key defensive check against this run. Stacked fronts with a Mike linebacker reading the mesh point tend to shut down inside zone runs by forcing the HB to commit early into traffic.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is running with the bunch receiver, which reveals man coverage or a rotating zone shell before the snap.

This play hits best on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when defenses are not selling out to stop the run.

Pair this with Inside Zone (the non-motion version) in the same set to keep defenders guessing on whether motion is coming, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.

If the defense shows a stacked box with linebackers creeping to the line pre-snap, consider checking to a play-action shot like Mtn PA Crossers or Mtn PA Slide to punish overaggressive run fits.

Trust the zone blocking scheme and stay patient, letting the play side double team develop before committing to a cutback, since jumping the cut too early kills the play's design.
