Drive Y Corner comes out of Bunch Wide in Shotgun with 11 personnel, stacking three receivers tight to the formation while the backside X runs a vertical release up the numbers. Out of the bunch, the point receiver bends into a corner route breaking outside the numbers, while the two remaining bunch receivers run drive routes underneath (an inside receiver crossing shallow and a second receiver running a shorter drive route that stalls flat for a quick outlet). This is a Cover 4 beater built to attack the seam and boundary with the corner route as the primary read, working down to the drive routes as the underneath progression against zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap identify single high versus two high safeties, Drive Y Corner shreds Cover 4 because the corner route occupies the flat defender and attacks the seam void between the corner and safety. Watch the deep safety on the bunch side after the snap, if he stays flat footed or bites on the drive routes underneath the corner will be wide open behind him. Check linebacker depth before the snap, shallow linebackers struggle to wall off the drive routes crossing underneath, giving the quarterback an easy checkdown read. Beware user controlled defenders sitting in a deep quarter or playing lurk near the corner route breakpoint, since the ball has to travel and can be jumped if the quarterback telegraphs the throw. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender and deep half rotation can take away both the corner and the underdrive routes, forcing the quarterback to hold and check down late.

Usage Tips

Target the corner route first against Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells since it stretches the deep quarter defender and exploits the space between the corner and safety. Use the drive routes underneath as your checkdown against zone coverage when the safety rotates over the top to take away the corner. Motion the backside X vertical route to check for man coverage, if a defender follows across the formation you know it is man and can hold the ball for the deep corner or backside vertical win. Pair this play with Curl Flat or Slot Hook in your call sheet to keep defenses guessing between deep shots and quick underneath completions out of the same bunch look. Best used on second and long or third and medium when you need a chunk gain but still want a built in safety valve underneath.
