Drive Y Corner is a designed Cover 4 beater out of Shotgun Bunch Wide with 11 personnel. The isolated receiver runs a vertical route to hold the corner deep, while out of the bunch the Y receiver breaks to a corner route stemming outside, the middle bunch receiver runs a drive route underneath, and the third bunch receiver clears out on a shallow crossing drive route to the opposite flat. The primary read progression starts with the corner route since it attacks the seam between the deep quarter defenders, then works down to the underneath drive route if the corner is capped, using the shallow crosser as a checkdown against man coverage.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in a two-high shell since Cover 4 and Cover 2 are the primary coverages this play is designed to exploit through the seam. Key the deep outside cornerback on the isolated receiver's vertical route, if he stays deep and doesn't jump the corner route, the window for Y stays open longer. Post-snap, watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field who can undercut the drive route coming across. Against man coverage, the corner route loses its main advantage since there is no natural seam to exploit, so the underneath drive routes become the primary counters. If the defense blitzes off the edge, the shallow crossing drive route becomes the emergency outlet since it clears the line of scrimmage quickly.
Usage Tips
Look pre-snap for two-high safety shells since this play is built to split the seam on Cover 4 and Cover 2 defenses.
If the defense shows single-high or man coverage, hot route the corner route to a slant or bring the drive route into a quicker option since the corner takes time to develop.
Use this on second and medium to long, or first down, when you have time to let the corner route stem and clear the underneath zone.
Pair this with Curl Flat or Slot Hook from the same set so the defense has to respect both the corner shot and quick underneath answers off similar bunch alignment.
Watch the flat defender on the crossing drive route since a sinking corner or aggressive slot defender can jump that route and bait a turnover if you force it.
