Breakdown

Verticals out of Shotgun Bunch Wide sends four receivers vertical to stretch the field, with the bunch side releasing two seams and a wheel-style out and up while the backside X runs a straight go up the boundary. The HB stays in as a check release blocker or flat option out of the backfield, giving the QB a five-man protection look before he climbs the pocket. This is a Four Verts man beater and Cover 2 beater, attacking the deep half safeties and any linebacker forced to run with a seam runner, with the primary read starting on the inside seam then working outside to the corner route breaking off the top of the bunch.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify safety depth and spacing: two safeties sitting at 10-12 yards with even leverage signals Cover 2 or Cover 4, both of which the seam routes are designed to split. Watch the flow of the middle linebacker at the snap, since a linebacker who sprints to match the inside seam opens a throwing lane behind him in Tampa 2 or Cover 4 zone drops. Key the corner over the bunch: if he presses and turns to run with the seam release instead of sitting on the flat threat, that confirms man coverage and the wheel/corner combo becomes the answer. User-controlled defenders sitting in a deep middle third (Cover 3) can rob one seam, so track which safety stays home and throw opposite his help. This concept struggles against a true Cover 3 buzz where a linebacker drops into the deep middle hole, or against Cover 2 Man where the corner has safety help over the top on the seam.

Usage Tips

Snap this on early downs or third and long when you expect two deep safeties, since the seam routes will split a Cover 2 shell right down the middle.

Read the middle of the field pre-snap: if the safeties are tight and rotate to one high, work your eyes to the single receiver go route on the backside for a one on one shot.

Use the HB check release as your outlet against a delayed blitz, then reset your eyes back to the seams once the pocket holds.

Pair this call with Curl Flat or Slot Hook from the same set so you can show similar bunch alignment and keep the defense guessing between shallow combo routes and the vertical shot.

Hot route the outside vertical from the bunch into a corner-flat if you see Cover 3 rolling hard, since the natural corner break already threatens that zone beater window.
