The primary read progression starts with the slant/flat combo working the leverage of the underneath defenders, then works to the hook sitting down as the intermediate answer, with the go route as the field-clearing outlet against man coverage.
Defensive Reads
Key the cornerback aligned over the bunch pre-snap: press man alignment signals the slant into the flat will be open immediately off the natural rub from the bunch formation. Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, since a shallow drop means he can undercut the hook route and force the quarterback to hold the ball longer. Identify single high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3, which are the most vulnerable to this concept because the flat and slant occupy the same underneath defender. To shut this play down, play Cover 2 or Cover 4 with disciplined zone drops so the flat defender can sink under the slant while a linebacker spins to the hook route. User the middle linebacker or a nickel defender as a lurk threat sitting on the hook route to bait the quarterback into a turnover, especially on early downs when offenses lean on this quick concept.
Usage Tips
Use this play on third and short to third and medium when you need a quick, high percentage completion against man coverage. Pre-snap, check the corner over the bunch: if he is playing tight man technique, the slant into the flat will win instantly off the pick action created by the bunch alignment. If you see a single high safety and the corner is bailing into a zone drop, the hook route becomes the primary read since it settles in the soft spot underneath. Hot route the backside flat receiver into a deeper option if the defense is showing two high safeties, since the flat conflicts with shallow zone defenders in Cover 2 looks. Pair this play with Curl Flat or Cross Screen from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and screen concepts without changing formation. Save this call for man heavy defenses or blitz-happy opponents since the quick slant and hook get the ball out before pressure arrives.
