Speed Dig Out is a five-man route concept out of Shotgun Bunch Wide that stacks three receivers tight to one side while an isolated receiver runs a vertical release on the backside. Out of the bunch, one receiver clears deep on a corner-breaking route to hold the deep defender, one runs a speed dig across the middle, and the third works an out toward the sideline for a quick underneath option, while the backside receiver runs a straight vertical to occupy the far cornerback. This is a man beater at its core, using the bunch alignment to create natural rub traffic and pick off man defenders, with the speed dig as the primary read against man coverage and the out route serving as the checkdown against underneath zone drops.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a defender walked up tight to the bunch receivers pre-snap, that usually signals man coverage and tells you the speed dig will have room to work against the rub. If linebackers show depth and width in their pre-snap alignment, they are likely playing zone drops that can undercut the speed dig, so key their eyes at the snap to see if they sink under the crossing route. A single high safety look means the backside vertical route is drawing extra attention, watch for late safety rotation over the top that could bracket the corner route out of the bunch. User-controlled defenders sitting in the middle of the field as a lurk threat can jump the speed dig route, so if you see a defender spying that lane, look to check down to the out route instead. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with corners playing outside leverage tend to shut down the out route quickly, forcing you to rely on the dig or vertical for explosive plays against those coverages.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, check for man coverage indicators like a defender aligned tight over the bunch or a corner shadowing the backside vertical receiver, since the rub action off the bunch is what makes this play dangerous.
Your first read is the speed dig coming across the field, it should be open quickly against man coverage thanks to the natural pick from the corner route clearing out the deep defender.
If the defense shows a soft zone shell like Cover 3 or Cover 4, work the out route as a quicker underestimated option since the dig may sit in a linebacker's zone.
Use the backside vertical route to hold single high safeties honest, especially on third and long when you want to stress the defense deep and force a decision.
Pair this play with Curl Flat or Slot Hook from the same bunch set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and the intermediate crossing shot, forcing linebackers to respect multiple route depths off the same look.
