Branch Return

Breakdown

Branch Return is a Shotgun Bunch Wide passer play built off a jet motion tag that pulls a receiver across the formation before the snap. Out of the bunch, one receiver runs a deep vertical corner up the sideline, another works a pivot/return route back to the flat after selling outside release, and the third clears underneath from right to left as a drag. The lone receiver on the motion side breaks upfield on a wheel route after his jet motion, giving the quarterback a four-level stretch from deep corner to intermediate drag to underneath wheel. This is a man beater at its core, using the return route and wheel combo to create natural rub separation against man coverage, with the deep corner route serving as the first read on any single high shell.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the safety count and note if the defense shifts a defender to match the jet motion, since that confirms man coverage and opens up the wheel route as a big play threat. Watch for cornerbacks playing outside leverage on the bunch receivers, which signals they are anticipating the corner route and may bait an interception if the quarterback forces it early. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender flowing toward the flat or drag route, since that lurk threat can undercut the underneath crossing routes if the quarterback does not move the ball with timing. Zone shells with linebackers sinking into hook zones can clog the drag and return routes, so respect the deep corner as the counter punch against those drops. Blitz packages that send extra rushers up the middle create favorable one on one matchups on the outside, so if you see a nano blitz look pre-snap, get the ball out fast on the return route before pressure arrives.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap: if you see a single high safety, throw the deep corner route immediately off the snap before the shell rotates over. Use the jet motion to identify man versus zone, if a defender follows the motion man across the formation you have a clean man beater with the wheel route as your answer versus blitz. Against zone shells, work the return route and drag combo underneath since the rub action from the bunch creates natural separation against zone defenders sitting in short areas. This play hits well on second and medium to third and long situations where the defense is more likely to play off coverage or zone drops. Pair this call with Curl Flat or Slot Hook from the same set to keep the defense honest on the underneath routes, then come back to Branch Return once you see linebackers cheating up to jump those shorter throws.
