Defensive Reads

Identify the single high safety before the snap, since he is the primary defender you are attacking with the post route. Watch his post snap trigger, if he steps up on the play fake or bites on the under route, the post will be open behind him for an explosive gain. Key the flat defender and underneath linebackers, if they sink too fast to cover the deep out and under combo they leave running lanes for the quarterback on a scramble drill. Against Cover 3, look for the deep third defender to widen with the deep out, which opens a throwing lane on the post if the middle of the field safety cheats late. If you see two high safeties pre-snap indicating Cover 2 or Cover 4, hot route the post into a deep in or peel off to the deep out on the bunch side to avoid throwing into a squeezed window. Pair this play with Cross Screen or Inside Zone earlier in a series so defenders start keying run action, then hit them with PA Post to punish linebackers and safeties for creeping up. Combine with Verticals or Seam Divide from the same set as a follow-up call to keep defenses honest if they start rotating extra help over the post after seeing it once.
