Spread Y-Flex is Shotgun's most complete 11 personnel set: three receivers, a flexed tight end, and a single back offset next to the quarterback. The difference between this and standard Shotgun trips or slot sets is the Y alignment. The tight end flexes off the line instead of attaching, which forces the defense to declare whether that body is covered by a linebacker (grade A matchup for you) or a nickel corner (a tell that the defense is in a lighter package and vulnerable to the run game). With a 2x2 or near-balanced spread look depending on the play art, there is no obvious strength side for the defense to rotate toward, so pre-snap safety alignment tells you almost everything about the coverage shell.
The play list is enormous and it spans every concept family you need in one set. RPO Alert Screen, RPO Read Screen, RPO Peek Slant, RPO Zone Peek, RPO Zone Alert Screen, and RPO Alert QB Draw give you a full option package off the same base look. Inside Zone, QB Zone, Read Option, Inverted Veer, and HB Draw keep the box honest. Then you have the entire dropback tree: Mesh, Drive, Y Cross, Y Shallow Cross, Four Verticals (two versions), Smash Corners, Curl Flats, Y Stick, Y Sail, and Deep Attack. The Mtn (motion) family plus Fake Jet Mesh Wheel, Fake Jet HB Wheel, and Jet Touch Pass add a pure gadget layer, which is why the set carries the Gadget and SLWR tags.
Matchup isolation is where this set earns money. A flexed Y against a backer in man coverage is an instant win on Y Stick, Raider Y-Option, Y Corner, and Angle Y Sail. On the other side, the SLWR tag means you can get your best route runner in the slot with free access off the line, and the screen package (WR Screen, FL Screen, HB Slip Screen, Mtn WR Mid Screen, Mtn TE Mid Screen) punishes defenses that play soft and bail.
Read the defender over your flexed Y before anything else: if it is a linebacker, go straight to Raider Y-Option, Y Stick, or Angle Y Sail and let the Y win on an option or angle route
Against single high with the free safety cheating a hash, run Four Verticals or PA Seams and hot route the backside receiver to a seam so you have a two-on-one on the middle of the field
Use the Mtn motion plays early to confirm man or zone without wasting a possession, then come back to Mesh or Drive against man and Curl Flats or Z Spot against zone using the same shell
When a user is bailing to take away the deep third, go to FL Screen, WR Screen, or Mtn WR Mid Screen for easy six to nine yards, and once they start jumping the screen, RPO Alert Screen turns it into a give on Inside Zone
On third and five to eight, Y Cross and Deep Attack are your best answers, but block the running back in pass protection with a hot route if the opponent has shown any five-man pressure because you need the extra body to get to the deep cross
Hot route the outside receiver on the RPO plays to a fade or slant depending on the corner leverage, since the peek read is only as good as the route you attach to it
