The backside receiver runs a deep dig up the seam, the inside receiver crosses underneath on a shallow drive route working from the backside to the play side, and the play side TE runs a short crossing route that settles into the void vacated by underneath defenders, while the play side outside receiver runs a quick out breaking to the sideline. Protection shows a check release with the HB scanning to the play side flat before releasing, giving the QB a built in checkdown if the levels routes are covered. The primary read progression starts with the deep dig, works down to the shallow drive crosser sitting in the middle void, and finishes with the flat route or HB check release.

Defensive Reads

Identify two high safeties pre-snap since this concept is built to exploit Cover 4 and Cover 2 shells that leave the deep middle honey hole open for the dig route. Key the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow and does not widen with the crossing route the QB will throw the dig behind him for a big gain. Watch for a nickel or slot corner sinking under the shallow drive route in zone coverage, that defender jumping the crosser is the biggest post snap red flag that the underneath window is closing. Against man coverage look for the crossing traffic to create natural picks, if the defense runs a banjo or switch call on the crossers that signals they have seen this concept before. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender squatting on the play side out route can bait the QB into a turnover if he stares down the flat instead of progressing through his reads.

Usage Tips

Look for two high safety shells before the snap since this play is tagged as a Cover 4 beater and the dig route sitting behind the underneath zone defenders will split the safeties if they stay deep. Hot route the shallow drive crosser into a shorter option against man coverage if your receiver lacks separation speed, since the natural pick from crossing traffic creates a rub against tight man defenders. Use this on second and medium to second and long when defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells rather than bring pressure. Pair this call with Y Stick or Mesh from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and levels concepts, then dial up Four Verticals once you see linebackers cheating up to jump the shallow crosser. Watch the HB check release closely against blitz heavy defenses, since he becomes your answer against man pressure off the edge.
