Breakdown

Drive out of Shotgun Spread Y-Flex is a classic levels concept designed to attack zone and man coverage with a horizontal stretch on one side and a vertical shot on the other. The outside receiver runs a deep comeback breaking back to the sideline, the inside receiver on that side pushes a deep vertical seam to hold safeties, and the near receiver runs a shallow drive route crossing underneath. The TE or slot runs a deep dig from the opposite side working back across the field over the shallow crossers, giving the QB a clear high low read from the crossing drive route underneath to the deep dig, with the comeback as a boundary check late in the progression.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth, if both safeties sit deep and wide it signals a shell that can squeeze the deep dig, be ready to jump the underneath crossers instead. Key the flow of linebackers at the snap, if they widen with the shallow drive route they open a throwing lane for the deep dig behind them. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the middle of the field baiting the deep dig, that lurk threat is the biggest risk to this concept. Man coverage on the vertical seam route is a green light to work the levels combo underneath since the seam should occupy the safety. Cover 4 shells struggle with the combination of the seam and dig stretching the safeties vertically, but disciplined zone drops from linebackers can undercut the shallow drive route timing.

Usage Tips

Use this on second and medium to second and long when you need a chain mover with layered underneath and intermediate options.

Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safeties, the deep dig and vertical seam combo punishes single high man coverage badly.

Hot route the shallow drive route into a quick option or slide it to the boundary if you see man coverage across the formation for an easy rhythm throw.

Pair this play with Y Stick or Curl Flats in your call sheet, Drive attacks off the same initial receiver spacing but stresses defenders vertically after they bite on shorter route concepts.

Against zone shells, work the QB progression from the shallow crosser to the deep dig sitting in the void between linebacker level and safety depth, do not skip to the comeback too early.
