Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two deep safeties, since this indicates a zone shell that the dig route is designed to exploit in the seam. Watch the underneath linebackers and their depth at the snap, if they sink into the drive concept window too fast the crosser or drag will be sitting behind them wide open. Post-snap, user the middle linebacker or a lurking defender to sit on the dig route crossing pattern, since this is the primary read the quarterback will try to hit first. This play struggles against aggressive man coverage with a spy or a robber safety sitting in the middle of the field, since the crossing routes lose their natural picks when a defender is sitting in that exact window. Cover 3 with a hard buzzing safety can also disrupt the shallow crosser and drag combo if the defense times the underneath drop correctly to jump the route before it clears the traffic.

Usage Tips

Check the pre-snap safety alignment before the snap, if you see two deep safeties splitting the field evenly this is your green light against Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells.

Use motion pre-snap if available to identify man versus zone coverage based on whether a defender follows the receiver across the formation.

Target the dig route first against zone coverage since it sits in the natural void between the underneath zone and the deep safeties.

Against man coverage, work the shallow crosser and drag route combo since the natural rub and pick action creates late separation for the underneath receivers.

Pair this play with Empty Mtn Dagger or Four Verticals in your play-calling sequence to keep defenders honest on the vertical shots, then come back to Empty Mtn Drive to punish aggressive underneath jumps.
