Breakdown

Double Slants aligns out of Shotgun Spread Y-Flex 11 personnel with three receivers to the left and a tight end plus outside receiver to the right. Both outside receivers to the left run vertical stem routes up the sideline while the inside slot receiver on that side and the tight end on the right both break into quick slants toward the middle of the field, crossing underneath the vertical routes. This is a man beater built to attack inside leverage, since the two slant routes create natural rub potential against man defenders and give the quarterback a quick high-low read from the tight end slant against zone drops. The primary read progression starts with the tight end slant, then works to the inside slot slant, and if both are covered the quarterback can climb the pocket and look downfield to the outside vertical routes.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sit shallow in zone drops the slants will get squeezed so look to climb the read to the outside verticals instead. Identify Cover 1 or Cover 3 shells pre-snap since the slant combo is designed to exploit the seams vacated by single high safety looks. Key on user controlled defenders flashing into the middle of the field, a lurking linebacker or nickel corner can jump both slants and bait a costly interception. Recognize when the defense shows two high safeties with tight man coverage on the outside receivers, this can signal a Cover 2 look that clogs the underneath slant windows and forces you to hold the ball longer. Against nano blitzes or interior pressure packages, get the ball out on the tight end slant immediately since the quick throw beats the rush before it can disrupt the pocket.

Usage Tips

Fire this play on early downs or third and short since the slants develop fast and beat aggressive man coverage before the pocket collapses.

Pre-snap, check if the defense is showing single high or two high safeties, because slants gash Cover 3 and Cover 1 defenses hard if the underneath defenders sit too deep.

Use the tight end slant as your first hot read against blitz heavy calls, it clears the middle quickly and gets the ball out before pressure arrives.

Motion the slot receiver if needed to confirm man coverage, then trust the slant to win on the rub concept against man match defenders.

Pair this play with Y Stick or Mesh from the same set to keep defenses guessing between quick slant angles and shallow crossing concepts, forcing linebackers to widen their run and cover responsibilities.
