Jet Touch Pass is a jet motion quick pass out of Shotgun Spread Y-Flex that gets the ball out of the quarterback's hands almost immediately. The receiver goes in jet motion across the formation and the quarterback flips a quick touch pass to him in the flat as he crosses the line, while another receiver on the opposite side runs a shallow crossing route underneath the box to occupy second level defenders. This is a run-pass hybrid designed to attack the perimeter with numbers in space rather than beat coverage with route detail, so the primary read is simply getting the ball to the jet motion man immediately and letting blocking and space do the work.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a linebacker or slot corner cheating toward the jet motion pre-snap, since that indicates the defense has a spy assignment ready to jump the touch pass. Man coverage with no extra flow to the motion side is where this play hits hardest because the receiver already has a numbers and leverage advantage in space. Zone shells that flow hard with the motion, especially Cover 3 sky or Cover 2 with the corner squeezing down, can close the throwing window fast so the quarterback needs to release on time. Look at defensive end and outside linebacker leverage before the snap since edge defenders sitting wide or crashing down can either blow up the pitch or get sealed by the blocking scheme. User-controlled defenders flying across the formation to jump the jet man are the biggest threat, so counter by pairing this play with the Inside Zone or Read Option from the same formation to keep defenders honest.
Usage Tips
Snap the ball right as the jet motion man crosses the backfield to maximize his forward momentum before the catch.
Use this on early downs or short yardage to keep defenses honest against your outside run game since the motion mimics a jet sweep look.
If the defense shows blitz or crashes hard to the motion side pre-snap, get the ball out even faster since this play is designed to beat aggressive edge pressure.
Pair this with Inverted Veer or Read Option from the same set so defenders have to respect both the give and the touch pass off identical jet motion.
Avoid calling this against teams that consistently spy or key the jet man with a linebacker since that defender can blow up the touch pass before it develops.
