Breakdown

HB Slip Screen out of Spread Y-Flex Shotgun sends four receivers vertical to clear out the underneath zones while the offensive line shows pass pro before releasing to wall off defenders in front of the screen. The HB slips out of the backfield to the flat as the QB's first and only true read, using the receiver releases as decoys to hold linebackers and safeties upfield. This is a screen pass designed to bait aggressive pass rushers and blitz packages, punishing defenses that send extra rushers or sit in man coverage with tight underneath leverage.

Defensive Reads

Key the defensive line for contain discipline, a good defense will have a DE or DT spy the screen and stay home instead of crashing upfield. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if linebackers sink into deep zone drops immediately it signals the defense recognizes screen action and will be sitting on it. Man coverage with underneath defenders in trail technique is vulnerable since those defenders are focused on receivers running vertical rather than the HB. Identify aggressive blitz packages pre-snap, all-out pressure and nano blitzes get exploited hard by this concept because the extra rusher never affects the throw. Sit-and-read zone coverages like Cover 2 or Cover 3 with disciplined linebackers can blow this up if the Mike or Sam reads screen and drives on the HB quickly.

Usage Tips

Call this play when the defense shows pressure pre-snap, especially overload blitzes or nano blitzes from the edge since the screen negates the extra rusher entirely.

Watch for user defenders spying the backfield or sitting the flat, if you see a defender crashing down on the RB pre-snap consider checking into a different play at the line.

Pair this with Four Verticals or PA Seams earlier in a drive so the defense respects the vertical shot and commits linebackers to deep drops, opening the screen lane.

Use on early downs or second and long when defenses expect dropback passing concepts, the four vertical releases sell the play-action feel of a downfield shot.

Let the blocking develop before throwing, patience is key since the linemen need time to release and set up the wall in front of the HB.
