Breakdown

Mtn Drive out of Shotgun Spread Y-Flex 11 personnel is a classic drive concept paired with two outside vertical clear-outs. The two outside receivers run vertical stems (one with a hitch/comeback break, one straight up the numbers) to occupy the deep defenders, while the TE runs the shallow drive route under the flat defender and the slot receiver runs a deeper crossing route over the top of it, creating a natural rub and separation window against man coverage. The single back checks into a swing/flat route to the flat as a checkdown outlet, and this is a designed dropback pass with no run-blocking action, making it a true man beater with zone beater traits versus Cover 4 due to the two clearing verticals occupying the corners and safeties. Primary read progression starts with the shallow drive route underneath, then works to the deep crossing route as it clears the second level, with the swing route as the checkdown if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment: two-high shells signal potential Cover 4 or Cover 2, which this play attacks with the clearing verticals opening the crosser. Watch the slot cornerback or nickel defender's leverage, since inside leverage invites the deep crossing route to sit in the void behind him. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, if he sinks under the shallow drive route and widens with the crosser, look immediately to the swing route checkdown. This play struggles against aggressive Cover 3 sky or buzz looks where a safety rotates down to rob the shallow drive route, so if you see a safety cheating toward the box pre-snap, be ready to check into a run or a play with a different underneath answer. Man coverage with underneath linebacker blitz help is the biggest liability here, since a nano blitz through the TE's release lane can disrupt the shallow route before it develops, so identify blitz indicators like walked-up linebackers or safeties creeping to the line before the snap.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone before the snap, since the shallow drive route is a true man beater that exploits linebackers who cannot stay in phase underneath.

Against Cover 4 or quarters shells, trust the two vertical clear-outs to occupy the safeties and throw the deep crossing route into the vacated middle of the field.

This play excels on second and medium to third and medium since the drive concept gives you a quick underneath answer plus a deeper crosser if the sticks require more yardage.

Pair Mtn Drive with Mtn Replace or RPO Peek Slant in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the shallow crossing action and quick game answers from the same formation look.

If the user drops a defender into the shallow drive route's lane, hot route the TE into a quick out or speed up his release to beat the underneath jump before the linebacker settles.
