Raider Y-Option lines up in Shotgun Spread Y-Flex with 11 personnel and attacks the defense with five routes designed to stretch every level of the field. The backside receiver runs a deep post while the slot runs an out that clears underneath, and on the strong side the outside receiver takes a vertical seam while the Y (TE) runs the namesake option route, breaking in or out based on the defender's leverage. The lone red route is the HB, who releases up the middle as a checkdown or option route himself, giving the quarterback a built-in progression from the Y option to the vertical seam and finally to the backfield outlet. This is a man beater at its core, using the Y option's natural leverage-reading break to shake off linebackers and slot corners in man coverage.

Defensive Reads

On defense, key the Y (TE) at the snap since the option route is the primary target and its break direction tells you where the ball is going almost immediately. Man coverage defenders should sit slightly inside the Y's release to bait the outside break, then use a user controlled defender to jump the route rather than trailing. Zone defenses should keep an underneath linebacker or nickel spying the option route zone landmark rather than committing to the vertical seam receiver, since the seam is a designed clear out. Watch for the HB releasing up the middle as a checkdown, a spy or a linebacker sitting at the second level can jump this route if the quarterback gets pressured into a quick decision. Disguised blitzes that bring pressure off the edge can rush the option route read before the break develops, making a nano blitz or edge pressure package one of the most effective counters to this concept.

Usage Tips

Presnap, identify whether the defense is showing man or zone by checking linebacker depth over the Y option alignment, since this route only creates real separation against man coverage or zone defenders who bite on the initial vertical stem.

Use the Y option as your first read and trust the break, if the covering defender sits inside, break the route outside and vice versa, this is not a route you want to fully script.

Against zone shells with a deep half safety over the top, work the vertical seam route on the strong side as a big play window before checking down to the HB.

This play pairs well with Y Stick or Stick Double Slant in the same set, since both look similar presnap but attack underneath, keeping linebackers honest and setting up the option route to hit for explosive gains later in a series.

Best used on second or third and medium, where the option route's natural conversion window matches the down and distance, and the HB route gives you a safety valve if the rush gets home.
